Reversing lights and MOT's
rf900rush - 22/6/10 at 08:23 PM

Just changed my broken reversing BEC box to a new MNR one.

Just found no reversing light switch.

So my question is.....

Can I use a seperate dash mounted switch for the rear light , and be MOT complient ?

Ideal woluld be a bracket and a switch, but time is short at the moment.

A reverse light is NOT needed for MOT
Not tested

To be honest, i don't think Reversing Lights are a compulsory item for MOT. I have no Reverse Lights fitted to my Indy, and it passes an MOT every year.

Cheers Eric.

as above not required for MOT

As above, don't worry

Reverse light is not tested and does not have to be fitted

as you are not allowed to show white light to the rear hench when your rear light unit is cracked and it shows white light its a fail

Showing white light to the rear doesnt come into the MOT test, a cracked lense would fail because the light would be the wrong colour, eg not amber if it was an indicator, pedantic i know but thats the way it is.

This is the exact same manual that is accessed from an MOT computer, http://www.motinfo.gov.uk/htdocs/index.htm

ok so if the bulb is not coloured red or amber for the rear then it would be white light shown to the rear (wrong colour) therfore a fail dont teach me how to do my job

Eh? That means every car with a reverse light would fail...

They are a recognised option and if fitted to a vehicle after 86 should be e-marked and ideally work automatically from the box.

If you fit a switch you'll also need to install a tell tale on the dash to remind you to switch it off.

The bulb could be any other colour than it should be and it would fail, not just white. What about all the cars on the road with a number plate light on the top of the rear bumper, clearly showing white light to the rear? Do you fail all of these?

what has the number plate light got to do with the reverse light question number plate lights do not face the rear they shine onto the number plate the reflection from that is not a fail getting back to original question reverse lights are not tested so i say again do not teach me my job with your stupid coments

Cousin Cleotis - 23/6/10 at 11:50 AM

Some of the comments in this thread are misleading, showing white light to the rear of a car does not come into the MOT test.

On some number plate lights you can quite clearly see the lens of the light, not just the reflection.

There was no personal attack from me. There are is no need for comments like this "i say again do not teach me my job with your stupid coments"

Woo hoo it's an MoT Tester battle...

To lighten the tone guys -

1) I think his question has been answered

2) I've had to "steer" my MoT tester towards the correct regulations a few times but we're still good pals and I didn't need to "teach him his job"!

DRC INDY 7 - 23/6/10 at 12:42 PM

yes you can see white light with some lights but the light is not facing the rear like the tail lights thats why its not a fail the reason i say white light is because the correct colour bulb for number plate lights and reverse light is white im not talking about other colour bulbs because they are illegal to use anyway simples
