LED and standard bulb hazard not working
tims31 - 23/3/17 at 07:46 PM

After some info on this issue please.

I have my car wired up with LED rear, LED repeater and standard bulbs at the front and a Durite hazard switch which all operates fine with the standard Ford relay except flashes too fast.

I replaced the standard Ford flasher relay with this Electronic flasher relay from Vehicle Wiring Products and thought being an electronic relay it would sort out the flashing issue but it still flashes fast but also when using the hazard switch it just lights all the lamps dim and doesn't flash.

The hazard is wired as per the diagram below and as I said works fine with the standard relay.

Would it be that the rating of this relay is too much being 98W or is that irrelevant?

Any ideas please?

I tried a similar relay with mine and had no luck, so ended up using led flasher resistors from ebay (about a fiver a pair) only have one in each circuit and it works fine.

Do you mean you only needed one per side? How many LED lamps do you have fitted as I have 1 at the rear and 1 on the side.

I used https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/142182911991 after I changed everything to led. Just adjusted the flash time on it until it looked something normal.

I need a three pin, have seen a few just hope it will work with my hazards

Thought the 3rd pin was only an earth though?! For £7 it's worth a try :-)

Edit- looking at what you purchase originally, it's not designed for LEDs so it wouldn't have worked (IMO), it's just a 'non mechanical' flasher by looks of spec

You really need to be either all LED or not. Any hybrid state will cause issues. Go all LED and use a specific LED flasher unit and it will all work fine.

Trouble is I dont think that will work with the hazard switch I have used and that is all installed in the dashboard. I'd rather not have to take the whole dash apart again and replace the switch if I can help it.

Ok, it looks like I was wrong originally. The lamps flash too fast with both the Ford relay and the electronic one but at the correct speed when using the hazards which I guess is because there is more load.

Think I may just need to try a different electronic flasher relay

With the right relay (one that is not load dependant) it doesn't matter if you have a mixture of LED and normal lights.

Can you suggest which would be a good one to use three pin format as the one posted above

miskit - 24/3/17 at 09:57 PM

Usually you don't wire the electronic led/normal 3 pin units to earth at all. The unit goes in series with the +ve and the switch. The unit senses current flow (ie lights connected) and switches it on and off at a fixed rate. The indicator switch directs it to the appropriate lights. The 3rd pin is just for the dash light (else even the tiny dash light draw triggers it all the time).

Just checked yours and its not an auto sensing unit so it wont work with LEDS

my car has run two standard bulbs and two led bulbs for over 5 years with no problems.....if the flasher relay is fitted on the power supply line (use two one for indicators and one for hazards) you wont have problems.
i dont even use a "proper" hazard switch, just a standard dpst switch (on/off .... six terminals underneath) no problems.

Give Car Builder Solutions a call, they may cost a couple of pound more but if they recommend one and it doesn't work you can send it back.

I don't have relays on my system but one of these with steering wheel mounted buttons Self-Canceling Turn Signal Module Signal Dynamics 1501

yes, it looks like the relay I have used isnt right and may be the cause of the problem. I'll try another sepcifically for curing the fast flash and see if that works, it seems like others have the same set up as me and this has worked for them.

I'll report back when I have tried another relay.

I just bought this one NEW LED FLASHER UNIT RELAY INDICATORS 12V FOR LED LIGHT TURN SIGNAL 3 PIN 160949 - I had previously bought a cheap orange one that seemed to be a bit temperamental. This one is made by part of the Bosch group (apparently!)

BenB - 25/3/17 at 06:13 PM

I've got this one on my car with a mixture of LED and normal.

DC 12V 3 Pin Electronic Flasher Relay Fix LED Turn Signal Light Indicatior Flash

In my case I've got a slightly strange set-up with a 2-pin for hazards and a 3-pin for one-sided flashing. But it works so hey

Thanks guys, I've ended up buying one of these eBay Item and hope that it cures my problem. This is the one with the correct pin layout for mine CF14 as opposed to the CF13 which seems more common.

tims31 - 29/3/17 at 08:08 PM

Well it looks like the relay I had before was the problem. The new one arrived today and the indicators all flash at the correct rate both each side and on hazard, thanks for all the help guys.

One less job before IVA
