Holts damp start replacement
Shooter63 - 16/12/18 at 07:16 PM

Now Holts damp start seems to have disappeared, does anybody know of a decent replacement, WD40 does not count as a decent replacement, the classic Mini really hates damp conditions and I have already replaced all the electrical items with new and have the latest weather shield fitted.

I guess you are looking for an ignition 'sealer' rather than
'easy start'?

Yup easy start is no problem, but ignition sealer seems to be gone for some strange reason.

I remember well the joy of driving classic Mini's in the rain . I had one that seemed worse than normal that I fitted new distributor car , rotor arm , HT leads with waterproof plug caps .The cap was one of the old type with HT leads held in with screws inside the cap, I filled each hole in the cap with silicon RTV before fitting the copper cored leads then did the same with the plug caps and the ignition coil ,a smear of Vaseline around the top edge of the didtributor body before a smear of RTV on the base of the cap before fitting effectively making a gasket. Tested by running the engine and using a garden hose for 1/4 of an hour , never a problem afterwards .

Duck oil is still available ( Swarfega Product )

I have used it for years as a water repellent & in preference to damp start.

What about the old trick of a rubber glove with holes in the fingers over the dizzy and leads

not pretty, but does the job well

Try Q20 - fleabay or even some Poundland type shops.
It has excellent water repellant properties and though I've not tried it for your application I reckon it's worth a try.
Pif on here is IIRC UK MD so you could do worse than drop him a pm with any questions.
See youtube for product demo.
HTH.

I think I've sourced a can from a little old car spares shop that's been there for years, so fingers crossed
