R888R tyre wear
pekwah1 - 17/9/18 at 10:20 PM

Hi guys,

I put a set of 13” r888r tyres on my striker (the new toyos) and have covered about 3000 to 3500 road miles, no tracks, and I think the tyres are pretty much spent. I do push my car pretty hard, but I was somehow expecting to get more miles out of them for some reason.

Does this sound about right?

Cheers
Andy

Nope! Can you post up a few photos to show how they have worn?

Yeh will do, the wear does look nice and even, just worn quicker than I thought they would

Which compound are they?

pekwah1 - 18/9/18 at 10:40 AM

Pretty sure they’re softs...

AdamR20 - 18/9/18 at 12:40 PM

I think they only do one, which is said to be GG (medium).

3000 to 4000 miles is about rights switched to Nankang ns2r for a road / track day tyre did about 800 miles on track and 2000 on the road and when I sold the car they where about half worn

Seems very quick wear to me, obviously they grip like superglue and don’t get much tread new anyway, just didn’t seem like a lot of miles just for road use...

Depends what you’re looking for but seems about right to me if pushing the car hard - it’s the payoff for all that grip. Compare it to the life of super bike tyres which is more of a fair comparison than to tin top tyres which you’d expect 20-30k miles from etc.

I’m generally happier to replace high performance tyres every year or two anyway - better to wear them out than have them age and crack which I wouldn’t trust

Thanks for the comments, just wanted some advice in case something was awry.

Thinking about it, I have a live axle so it’s not like there’s any alignment issues on the rear as nothings adjustable.
Again the wear is all very even..

If wear is even across the tread then I applaud your vigorous use of them.
On a 750Kg 7 replica the Toyo CF1s i had did not wear except when the tracking was out, I had to drive like a get-away driver to get them remotely hot when they stuck.
I would always go for a softer tyre that had some wet grip
Or
2 sets of wheels and tyres
Or 3
Or 4
Or.......

Hi,

Yes seems very even wear, I haven’t had the geo done properly so could understand maybe the fronts wearing faster, but not the tears as there is no adjustment.

So conclusion is that r888 are very soft and wear quickly or I should stop trying to drive like ken block!!!

I very much doubt Ken Block pays for his tyres and in his videos tyre smoke and noise seems to be a key ingredient in drawing viewers to watch.

My son's asked me before if my tyres will smoke like Ken Blocks?

Well they might do, but they're too expensive to be smoked and squeeled like that (and I'm not of that driving inclination).

I'm using Kumho V70 tyres, with their softest compund I went through the fronts in about 500 miles on the road!!

I've now switched to the same tyre but the harder compund which I'm told is comparable to the 888 and wear is considerably better, although not superb I suspect I'll get 2-3k out of them.
