thinking about track days and general use.
Anyone got any recommendations for suits etc that don't break the bank in comparison to the amount of expected use. (2 or 3 track days a year)

I wouldn't bother with a suit. But if you really want one get a proban one (about 80 quid new from www.sparx.co.uk) or a 2nd hand one off ebay. Helmet wise, just get something comfortable, it doesn't nee to cost the earth. Biggest thing is the right shoes, i always buy puma speed cats (or similar) for every day wear and they are great to drive in.

Unless I'm mistaken Proban washes or wears out.
Better I reckon to spend the extra on Nomex.

You won't get on without a helmet, as you probably know. The lighter the better.
I always think people with suits look a little rediculous at a track day and they always seem to drive Caterhams.
Usually you just need long sleeves.
For shoes, I have owned nice ones from Demon tweeks, but recently was in one of those really big shoe shops (brantamo??) and trainers remarkably like driving shoes are trendy at the mo!! I think I paid £10!

Don't bother unless you're going racing. Just wear something wicking, temperature and precipitation appropriate, a light pair of gloves (motocross or cycling gloves work) and no bovver boots.

Yeah racesuits are often Caterham drivers or GT3 RS's

Check out carbonx as a more effective fire proof material if thats what you want.

Not cheap but works a lot better than nomex (there are some videos on youtube of a dude with a blow torch held against his head!)

id just buy a proban suit for track days. ive been wearing a single layer 1 for years doin sprinting. if its good enough 2 pass msa scrutineering its good enough for a track day, no need to spend a fortune

For 2-3 track days a year all I would buy is a helmet and gloves.

Helmets range massively in price. Its up to you how much you want to spend and what protection you want. You will want to spend at least £100 i think.

As for gloves, you can get karting gloves from demon tweeks for about £15-£20. Pretty much the same as racing gloves but not fireproof so alot cheaper.

The one bit of advice I would offer re helmet is ditch the visor and get a beefed up one, even been hit in the clock by a 100mph M8 nut for example ?

I have, dont scrimp on the visor.

Cheapest and most comfortable suit would be a karting one.

But, you are better off spending out on a mechanics overall, that you can put on when you need to lie under the car halfway through the day.
