I need a V8 in my life.... but for under £500?
tegwin - 27/5/09 at 07:08 PM

This might seem silly... but I want a V8 in my life.... if I can find a narrow alloy block V8 complete with 5sp gearbox and electricals to make it run for £500 It would be fantastic!

I might have to spend a little more on a new set of zorsts.....

Can anyone recomend anything?

Or am I being stupidly unrealistic?

There is a Disco V8i on Ebay for £100 in Ross on Wye and i did see a rover P6 manual gearbox for sale yesterday for £80, but for thr life of me i can't find it now.

Is the P6 gearbox a straight fit onto the V8I engine?

That engine for £100 looks like a good deal with all the bits and pieces... not a million miles away...

Any idea how heavy the engine is and how much power?

Is it a bad idea?.... It is... isnt it? :p

I don't know about that particular engine, but a 3.9 I had in a TR7 with an uprated cam and a Weber 500/Edelbrock manifold produced 226 bhp

Best 0-60 (again in the TR7) was 6.2 seconds.

The P 6 had a smaller diameter flywheel than the SD1 , not sure if the same a aplies to a Disco?

should do. the very first RRs had P6 engine - the 3.5 l block is same for both.

I would need to check but is it lighter than 2.25 Land Rover, probably not much more than a pinto. There are different figures quoted but 136 kg springs to mind.

depends what you want to do with it. There should be loads of them on ebay. Power is somewhat measly - you would ideally want SD1 engine. Ofcourse you can tune the lesser ones e.g. Range Rover by upping CR - done by fitting pistons. Parts are plentil and cheap - see the 2 main LR part people Craddocks and Paddocks, Rimmer Bros do parts too as do RPi engineering.

Rover V8 and Pinto are pretty close in weight from what I remember.
Figures from the internet are close to useless for comparison as everyone weighs the engine with varying numbers of bits and bobs attached - seemingly randomly.

My RV8 3.5 cost me £200 with all ancillaries straight out of the donor SD1. I got a Vitesse gearbox for £140 and spent another £150 or so on carb needles, P6 water pump and pulley, P6 crank pulley, remote oil filter etc.

For that £490 I should have around 170BHP of lazy V8 power and a glorious soundtrack to go with it. Sure, you can get way more BHP/litre from a bike engine or even a large number of car engines but if, like me, you want a V8 then 170BHP for £490 isn't too bad I don't think.

Good luck,
Craig.

I've got a spare SD1 5 speed box lying around - yours for £30.

I would suggest a BMW M60 V8, all ally, 146kg, 220bhp as a 3.0 or 286bhp as a 4.0 but they are quite wide as they are DOHC. I bought a 540i for £250!

not to shabby a deal for a v8

I would love a BMW engine... but they are just too wide...

The engine bay in the TVR is very narrow....

I would imagine the V8 would weigh less than the 6 pot cast iron item I currently have....

Hmm.... Its tempting.... would deffinately sound gooooood.... but should I be out driving the car rather than tearing it to pieces again? :p
