T66 - 23/1/10 at 06:46 PM

Wife has 2 week business trip in Delft, Holland coming up , I will be joining her the second week for a wander about.

Ive heard Leiden & Haarlem are worth a look, I will have about 3 - 4 days on my own so would like to sight see , and maybe take in a few museaums etc.

Car/Aircraft type stuff - Bloke stuff

PS No Im not doing the redlight in Rotterdam lol

The sprinkles look like they are suitable for slimmers ?

The Delft link is excellent, bicycle hire is a definite.

What about military museums , Arnhem is not too far away worth a look ?

Couple of other places worth a visit....
Den Helder in the North Dutch Naval town... also locally are some pretty good tulip fields (April onwards) and the islemer (not sure of spelling but you cant miss it) lake - and in the south Maastricht

nah, the only sprinkles we get are for cake decorating and they are really bad. I lived with a dutch student at uni, his dad used to send him parcels of sprinkles every few months XD They are really good though, I want some.

Amsterdam is worth a visit for the old buildings, canal boat trip etc. Also the Anne Frank Museum and the Rembrandt Museum.

T66 - 23/1/10 at 07:35 PM

We did Amsterdam a few years ago, loved the place but I would prefer to see a bit more of Holland.

I will go out on the Friday afternoon, have the weekend with the Mrs, then Monday to Thursday is mine as she will be at work till 6pm each day.

Home the following Friday

I think bike hire will be a winner.

How come you want to stick to north & south holland? Don't you want to see any other regions of the Netherlands?

There's a military museum in Delft, but I have never been there, so can't say if it's worth it. Aviodrome aircraft museum in Lelystad is nice though, also gives you the chance to visit Donkervoort factory in Lelystad (ideally you should have a car available though). Furthermore there's a military aircraft museum in Soesterberg.

Delft itself is also well worth a visit though. Nice old city with canals, the centre is small enough to discover everything on foot. For the center you definately won't need a bike. Go and eat applepie at Kobus Kuch (Beestenmarkt). You'll love it.

If you like old cities, don't go to Rotterdam (WWII wrecked the centre) but go to Dordrecht (oldest city of Holland).

ijsselmeer... http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/IJsselmeer

If you can hire a car... I would take Delft,
1. visit the beach Noordwijk
2. Drive to Lelystad, take "aviodrome": http://www.aviodrome.nl/english/
and: http://www.bataviawerf.nl/startpage.html
and stay at "de Lange Jammer" to taste the battle against the water, visit the harbour and eat at the waterside.
http://www.delangejammer.nl/en/links.htm

3. drive over the "Houtribdijk": http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Houtribdijk
and the "afsluitdijk": http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Afsluitdijk
4. If you like nature drive to the "Veluwe" and take the autoroute: http://www.vvvotterlo.nl/index.php?mod=show_detail&nawid=41365&titel_text=%20Zuid-Veluwe%20route
5. Maastricht is nice. "Vrijthof", "sint-pietersberg" and "mergelgrotten"
http://www.vvv-maastricht.eu/home.html
6. Utrecht is also nice
http://www.utrecht.nl/smartsite.dws?id=13353
7. Zeeland in the lower left is a visit worth.
http://www.zeeland.nl/index?lng=en
http://www.vvvzeeland.nl/en/
and the deltawerken: http://www.deltawerken.com/English/10.html?setlanguage=en

It is all up to taste...
you can ask for info here: http://www.vvv.nl/pagina/home/default.aspx

Enough?

Brilliant - Exactly what I was after.

Not hiring a car, prefer solo train travel.

I appreciate the replies thanks

2nd the Aviodome, worth a visit and relatively easy to get to by public transport.

Utrecht is worth a trip and is easy to get to as its a main transport hub. Let me know if you fancy a beer if your in town.

If your by car a trip to one of the islands or over the aflsuitdijkes is worth it if you have a slightly geeky interest in water management.

Its the wrong time of year for cycling around the national parks, but could be worth a drive. Laage Vuursche is a nice stop off for pancakes.

Medical science museum in leiden (and the city itself) is worth a look. Could try to blag yourself a factory visit to spyker or donkervoort

I still have to finalise when Im going and how much time I will have on the ground on my own.

The laptop is coming with me , so if I head for Utrecht I will drop you a line.
