how to chase brick walls??!?

Hi all,

Need to chase walls ready for sparky to come and do a quick rewire... have chase plaster out ok, but need to go into brick work 5-10mm as well. What is the best (quick and least painful!) way to do this?

Angle grinder two channels down then chip out the middle it's goin be dusty though

If you have got an SDS drill then get a chasing bit for it, or if the bricks are not hard then try the wall chaser from Screwfix at £21.95. The angry grinder will do it but is VERY VERY messy.

Ive only done it about twice, both for fairly small runs (one 6ft floor to socket leval and one about 2ftgoing sidewards) and i used a decent sds drill with a 20m bit and effectivly chain drilled it and then used a coal chisal. But i have seen the above used and they do seem quite effective.

I used an sds and chasing bit before, blew half my wall apart!

Went back to angle grinder and chisel, 10 min job with that

Give them a five second start, shout "coming, ready or not" and set off after them

the quick way normal is let the electrician do it (i am an electrician)

i use a Milwaukee wall chaser and a big draper hover,

and a cold chisel. or a breaker to clean the chases.

does not take long at all.

but if it is on a budget, angle grinder, very good face mask and goggles.

do small bits at a time, and clean out with a chisel.

I use 1 of these with the toothed ends. find they slice through the brick very easy and a lot less mess than an angry grinder.

I chased a one meter run through brickwork by using a short and wide masonry drill bit. Stick it in a regular mains hammerdrill, drill in about 15mm into the brick work then angle at about 45degrees and move along the wall, keeping the cut to the same depth. Get someone to hold a heavy duty vacuum below the drill bit. Not a very precise way to do it but it worked a treat for a short job and next to no mess.

Only use an angry grinder and cutting disc if you want the wall chased really quickly and have a week to spare to clean up afterwards.

thanks all - i'll load the diamond blade into the angry and give it a go.... if it's not looking good i'll go the hire shop route....

Look out for Aldi around about now they regularly sell a wall chaser about this time of year.
