Famous Engine Configuration
Johnmor - 25/10/06 at 07:27 PM

There has been a bit of discussion lately as to the merits and advantages of engines and their configuration.

So, in a light hearted way, i thought i would ask :

Whats the most famous car with a particular engine configuration

A few to start.

1 Cylinder -- (not sure if there are any)
2 Cylinder -- Must be the 2cv
3 Cylinder -- Dihatsu ? Polo diesel?
4 Cylinder -- Sierra Cosworth
5 Cylinder -- Audi Quatro
6 Cylinder -- Triumph Stag

Of course there is also:

V2 -- ?
V4 -- Saab
V6 -- Lancia Stratos
V8 -- Gt 40
V10 -- Dodge Viper
V12 -- Lambo, GTO, Mercedes

Flat 4 -- Subaru ? Alfa Sud ?
Flat 6 -- Porshe
Flat 8 -- ?
Flat 10 -- ?
Flat 12 -- Ferrari 512 boxer ( boyhood dream)

Im dead sure that almost nobody will agree with those , but hay, thats a democracy for you.

Good luck.

stevec - 25/10/06 at 07:29 PM

3cylinder, Wartburg two stroke.

Stag was 8cyl/

StevieB - 25/10/06 at 07:31 PM

Not a car, but one of the most famous V twins must be the Ducati 916, four pot has to be the Lotus Esprit for me, Dino 246 for the V6, TVR Griffith for the V8 and TVR Speed 12 for the V12.

Straight six - gotta be the M3 Evo

flak monkey - 25/10/06 at 07:32 PM

V2...gotta be the Harley...sorry did you say cars?

Having said that the KLR V-twin drag bike is something a bit special too...

Volvorsport - 25/10/06 at 07:33 PM

MattCraneCustoms - 25/10/06 at 07:34 PM

Mad Dave - 25/10/06 at 07:54 PM

If we're being silly

My favourite engine of all time, the *Deltic*

Makes my head hurt thinking about it....

rusty nuts - 25/10/06 at 08:17 PM

Just to point out that Triumph never made a six cylinder Stag ! They were all V8

iiyama - 25/10/06 at 08:26 PM

V5......

Honda RC211V MotoGP bike count??

DIY Si - 25/10/06 at 08:27 PM

That Deltic looks a wee bit fiddly! A flipping complicated engine from the looks of it.

Johnmor - 25/10/06 at 08:39 PM

The Russians built a 42, (count them) 42 cylinder radial engine to power marine barges. The Zvezda consisted of 7 banks of 6 cylinders each.

Had about 6000 hp.

Try mixing the ht leads on that one!!!!

Macbeast - 25/10/06 at 09:00 PM

I think Jowett Javelin and some Morgan 3-wheelers had JAP V twin.

dnmalc - 25/10/06 at 09:02 PM

V twin has to be a JAP powered Morgan
a car with a reliable engine introduced pre war and I can remember them being raced at brands up to the late 70s. Not a BEC and built in Totenham

smart51 - 25/10/06 at 09:05 PM

didn't the original volkswagen (beetle) have a flat 4?

iank - 25/10/06 at 09:14 PM

yes beetle is flat 4, as is alfasud.

Flat 8 has to be Porsche 908
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porsche_908

Straight 3 I'd have as the Diahatsu GTti

David

Deckman001 - 25/10/06 at 09:33 PM

Square 4 --- RG500 , oh the memories

Jason

Noodle - 25/10/06 at 09:55 PM

Daihatsu Charade GTti 3 cyl turbo.

Fab. Memories of playing catch with an engine at the end of an evening's spannering.

Nah, much prefer for the 3 cylinder, Kawasaki 500 - mate had one, absolutely mind blowing in their day.

6 cylinder - Kawa Z1300

or

Benelli 250cc 6 potter (bores must have been the size of a virgins ......).

Romer

jollygreengiant - 26/10/06 at 04:00 AM

Sorry, for me its still gotta be the H24 Napier Sabre. Sleeve valves, 4000 HP, 24 cylinders, 48 spark plugs and growl to be heard.

silex - 26/10/06 at 07:50 AM

Best V12 - Rolls Royce Griffon engine (as fitted to the Supermarine Spitfire)

Marcus - 26/10/06 at 08:29 AM

Weren't the old 'blower' Bentleys straight 8s?
Oh and the 'W16' engines - Bugatti Veyron etc

Johnmor - 26/10/06 at 09:07 AM

Griffin Engine !

Am i right in thinking that was after the Merlin was fitted late in ww2.

As for aircraft engines , I always liked the
Hercules radial engine that was fited in the Beaufighter, or the later Centaurus.

So many moving parts and so much depending on every bit !!!

Quiz

Which famous ww2 vehicle used aircraft radial engines??

Quite a few tanks did IIRC

What about the M3 Stuart Light Tank

Quiz bonus question why was its nickname the 'Ronson' amoungst the Brits?

Johnmor - 26/10/06 at 09:45 AM

The Shermans nick name had a very disturbing origin.

Not for the feint hearted.

This also used a Continantal radial engine

liam.mccaffrey - 26/10/06 at 09:49 AM

surely the most famous bike single cylinder were the BSA unit single bikes

Hammerhead - 26/10/06 at 09:56 AM

Triple's gotta be the Truimph bike engine 955i, speed triple et al.
V4 for the VMAX.

marktigere1 - 26/10/06 at 11:00 AM

4 cylindar has to be the Honda VTEC? Original CRX was a cracker.

After all, the Cosworth is only a Pinto derivative

Runs for cover.

Cheers

Mark

liam.mccaffrey - 26/10/06 at 11:11 AM

most famous v8 is cosworth DFV, most sucessfull F1 engine ever

Fred W B - 26/10/06 at 11:15 AM

Spot on Liam, I though the DFV was missing.

What about the BRM 16 cylinder, wasn't it called a H configuration?

Cheers

Fred WB

3GEComponents - 26/10/06 at 11:27 AM

V twin? Got to be this! Bimota V-Due.

Pure 2 stroke heaven! Rescued attachment blok3t.jpeg

pewe - 26/10/06 at 11:56 AM

My Laverda Jota has three cylinders and that sounds unbelievably raw - the neighbours hate it, especially on a Sunday morning when the students next door are still trying to overcome the excesses of the night before!
What about straight eights? Seem to recall a Packard in the 30's and Alfa Romeo used it on a GP car. Cheers, Pewe

flak monkey - 26/10/06 at 12:03 PM

If you liek weird engines the car that the company i work for built about 90 years ago is rather special...

Its got 12 pistons, no valves, 3 crankshafts and its 2 stroke....

Johnmor - 26/10/06 at 12:07 PM

My favourite F1 engine is the

Ferrari flat 12

Type: 312B Boxer F12
RPM: 11500
Power: 510 bhp ,

sounded fantastic!!

Dutchman - 26/10/06 at 12:59 PM

str8 6 - BMW must be

V4 - Taunus
V6 - renault alpine
V8 - Camaro - and all american m.
V10 - Viper

akumabito - 26/10/06 at 03:21 PM

Surely the most famous V8 engine must be the Chevy 350? Love it or hate it, it's been in production virtually unaltered for what? 50 years or so? It isn't the *best* engine, but hey, talk about popular!

Simon - 26/10/06 at 10:30 PM

Maybe if you're a yank, most here I suspect would say Rover V8!

VMax's suck!
