Wow
My Dad took me to see the the RAC Rally a few times when I was a kid - Tony Pond in a TR7 and Metro 6R4. Shockingly quick on slippery surfaces. I loved the Lancia Stratos best of all though.
How did his time on the IoM course compare to the bikes?
Cheers
Dave

spunky - 13/12/06 at 01:21 AM

Thats scarier than the bikes, cars are way to fat for the IoM

Bikes are lapping in around 18-19 mins. 125mph.

Think Maguiness got 129mph record this year, will need to check though.

C10CoryM - 13/12/06 at 01:26 AM

Wow. Nice drive.
There are only 2 circuits Ive seen that scare me. The Nordschleife and the Isle of Mann TT. Hats off to those brave enough to run them flat out.
Cheers.

Tony Pond used to live in ruislip, just up the road from me,saw him a few times buzzing around the roads in a 6R4,sad he went so young

gazza285 - 13/12/06 at 07:36 AM

PPHHTTTT.

George Formby did it quicker than that backwards.

t.j. - 13/12/06 at 07:38 AM

Brave people

Those who drive there with these kind of speeds

MikeRJ - 13/12/06 at 08:54 AM

Tony Pond really was a driving god. That car was essentialy standard bar the safety features and slicks, and those 800's weren't exactly small cars.

BenB - 13/12/06 at 10:06 AM

I wouldn't be seen dead in a Rover 800 Vitesse... which considering my driving would be pretty much guaranteed if I tried something like that
Shamon crazy mofo!

Coose - 13/12/06 at 11:04 AM

Someone has nicked his rearview mirror! Gypsies.....

mookaloid - 13/12/06 at 12:33 PM

What really impresses me is how relaxed he sounds as he chats whilst doing 150 mph between houses and drystone a
walls!

Cheers

I think we are forgetting that memorable incident driving the TR7V8 when he crashed out on a RAC special stage at Longleat, broke thru the netting and ended up in the Lion enclosure. Said felines came to see what all the fuss was about and the crew had to be 'rescued' by keepers.

pjavon - 13/12/06 at 07:42 PM

would love to see the clip with the lions. what a man brave as you like

As you probably heard from the commentary, he did try 2 years earlier with road tyres, and misse dthe time required by 8? secs

Bike are far quicker, they have far far superior p/w ratios, will approach 200mph UP the mountain, and have roads that are about 4 times wider than for a car. IIRC the 100mph bike lap was done in the 50's.

hats off to that - I always suspected I wasn't that good a driver, that confirms it for me

I can however think of more suitable cars to use for that purpose though

Liam - 14/12/06 at 07:57 PM

Rover 800 vitesse - LOL

Same engine as what's going in my locost though!!! Never knew it had such a motorsport pedigree!!

Is it still available, if so where from? (Duke?) I would like a higher quality version of this.

andyps - 15/12/06 at 05:54 PM

I bought it at the Chater and Scott stall at Le Mans last year. They still list it on their website - link here
