Have just had a reply from Fords Tech Dept and it's not quite what I'd expected. They say that my engine number should consist of two letters and five numbers. Rebuilding & Tuning Fords CVH Engine says that it should be three letters and four numbers, which is the format of the code stamped on my block. Has anyone experienced this before? It's a bit of a bummer if I've got it wrong as I've just got an updated V5 from DVLA with the same engine number on it that I sent to Ford.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Have just checked with Mr Haynes and he says my engine code should begin with the letters LUK as it's a 1600 with a carb, which it does. Is there a difference between an engine code and an engine number?

the engine code is the spec of the engine ie 1.3/1.4/1.6 etc,the number is unique to that engine,tho how they use 4 numbers and produce millions of engines each with a different number is beyond moi

i would be very interested in possibly tuning my cvh when the time comes - ony thing, is that a few ppl have said theres not a lot of point. i know it wasnt designed as a out and out race engine, but i would like to get the best performance out of it as poss.
would you reccommend the book?

It's definitely worth reading and goes into some good detail. It gives you a step by step guide to stripping and rebuilding the engine and covers the basic principles of tuning as well. there's nothing revolutionary contained within, but if it's gonna be your engine of choice it will give you a lot more information than a regular escort Haynes manual.

There are also loads of tuning accessories about for the 1600 CVH as it was fitted to the XR2, XR3, XR2i and the XR3i. There was a turbo variant too. It's not as "economy drive" in design as the 1800, but towards the end of it's days the design of the head was altered to give greater economy.

Puma Racing say that a 1600 CVH can be tuned to 170 BHP at the flywheel.

just out of interest, all ford engine numbers are the last seven digits of the original cars chassis number. 2 letters coded to year and month, the 5 numbers are purely sequential. You have to assunme that ford europe never expected to make more than 99,999 cars in any one month!

The engine type numbers are
1.0 = T
1.1 = g
1.3 = J
1.4 = F
1.6 = L
1.8 = R
2.0 = N
2.3 = Y
2.8 = P
2.9 = B

All followed by 2 other digits to give the type of engine at that capacity.



I am sure that the areas of my brain that stores all this stuff could be put to better use!!
