Which exhaust manifold for rwd zetec turbo?
Antnicuk - 13/3/16 at 04:53 PM

I'm just gathering bits to turbo charge my avon. There are quite a few turbo manifolds available but I'm not sure which configuration would suit the rwd set up best. There are cvh turbo, focus rs or complete custom ones available. What are purple favoring for correct layout and reasonable cost

It just so happens I've just had this just turn up, I was going for a boost performance manifold which puts the turbo on top of the manifold, but careful measuring meant that the turbo will be above the body line.

I've seen those and they look nice. Shame it will look like a drag car if it sticks out of the bonnet. What ate you going to do. ?

I doubt the focus rs mani will work as it puts the turbo near the bell housing flange. In a 7 this will be hard up to the bulkhead (passengers feet) unless your engine is well forward.

The cvh mani needs the head drilling or an adapter plate, neither are ideal.

The above mani will work but only comes with a T3 flange. Cheap cheerfull and shiney.

The boost mani can now mount the turbo above or below the mani but needs adapters for differant turbos.

Ultra "Locost" is a standard blacktop mani with the flange chopped of and what ever flange you like welded on.

Decide on what turbo you want and go from there.

For the price (£130.00 delivered ) I think they are ok, as you can see it mounts the tubo just below the exhaust port height giving me enough room to get the oil return for the turbo into the sump via a pipe welded into the sump. I think the hardest part will be getting a decent run for the exhaust.

I'm only aiming for about 300 bhp so I would like to think a t3 flanged turbo would suffice. I haven't looked at turbos yet so I spose the next question is what is a nice sized turbo for a stock compression zetec aiming for 275-300 bhp with a nice post curve.

A stock Zetec is on the limit at 250bhp with out pistons. An St170 hybrid should manage 300+.

A nice turbo for 250 ish would be an Impreza Td04. Plenty of these around at a fare price. The mx5 lot love them.
This flange gives you the option of td05 and the Vr series like the vf35 vf43 vf48.

My new project will be a midi so I can mount the turbo anywhere.

I've got a few setups that I am mocking it up at the moment.

I have an eBay mani that I've chopped the t3 flange off and welded a td04 on.

I've got an Direnza Focus Rs mani and the standard cast Rs mani and a Gt25

I'm by no means an expert, but I advise to read everything you can, this type of conversion has been popular for years, especially with the fiesta boys, the general consensus seams to be that 250bhp is about the limit with std pistons and rods. The least costly route seems to be with a decomp plate, escort rs turbo exhaust manifold with a converter plate etc.
As for the turbo, now a days garrett t3 framed turbos are big old beasts, the t25 is more the std for the sort of power that we are looking at, unless your like me and like to be a bit left field and fancy a holset.

Cut and turned a standard focus manifold to fit on mine.

Antnicuk - 15/3/16 at 07:34 AM

Thanks all. When you cut and turned. Did you cut all 4 pipes of and re weld them on upside down to get the turbo to point up. ?

Yes. Cut at head flange and rewelded
