Any Zetec Turbo owners? - advise please
hazardpro - 30/9/16 at 08:27 PM

Hi guys - hopefully some of you guru's can help me

History:

I have recently purchased a Kit car which has a 2L black top Zetec engine in it with a Escort RS (T3 I think) turbo conversion. It is also running a Type 9 gearbox.

It was a new engine about 5500miles old. The old engine got cooked... due to fan breaking. Rather than get the engine repaired it was replaced with a new one.

So the new engine is completely stock...

I have a Dyno print out for the OLD engine at 235bhp...

--------------

So... I want to get the Turbo turned up a bit.... but I want to keep things reliable and certainly don't want to knacker the engine or gearbox. I was hoping for around the 200bhp mark (apparently the Type 9's are only good for 200bhp?)

Anyway.. I spoke to a local Zetec/RS/Turbo tuning/mapping specialist company the other day... originally asking them about adding ARC bolts, lowering compression etc. and that I was looking for around the 200BHP mark.

They advised me that for 200bhp I don't need to do any modification to the engine and can leave it stock..... and recommend they set it up running around 8-10psi and do a custom map (£350).

So Im thinking - great stuff. No hassle etc.

BUT the more i'm reading online the more I see that leaving the engine stock will be asking for trouble? I don't want to call them out (they are the specialists after all) but I would like to get some other opinions.

So here I am Any input/advise etc. would be very much appreciated!

Stock zetec fine for 250bhp, anymore is pushing you luck.

If an RS Turbo T3, 250bhp is getting close to the limit of the Turbo really. (Exhaust housing on small side)
You would need to run 10-12psi

What engine managment have you got?

Hi

It's a mega squirt 1 I think.

Only looking for 190-200 as the type 9 gearbox won't handle much more I don't think?

Yes you do need to be careful with the gearbox, is a light car so your should be OK to 220 at a guess

have a look at what we've been upto..

I appreciate your advise thank you.

Do you think there would be any worth in me getting a compression plate and ARC bolts fitted to my engine?

I think ill go for around the 195-205bhp mark.

Thanks again

Doug

No need to reduce compression at that power level, we run 9.5/1 (stock) at 1bar boost no issues.

De-compress will lead ti poor throttle response and MPG

ARP bolts are only required if you planning high RPM, ARP head bolts do make sense on a turbo motor but again not required at this power level.
