ST170 a engine Identifiable
Barksavon - 30/6/17 at 11:02 AM

Does anyone know whether there is a surefire way of visually confirming a ST 170 engine is a ST 170 engine.... Probably going to buy a 2nd hand one thats not still in the car and don't want to get 'had over'
Thanks
Ian

Only zetec engine (exhaust on the passenger side, iron block when in UK RWD config) with a vct valve in the head. Also has a unique rocker cover which says duratec on it (a bit miss leading).

The rocker cover is unique so is the vvt solenoid just behind the cam pulleys.

There are a lot of these being broken at the moment so they are not rare enough to pass of as zetec as an st.

Regular oil changes are more important than mileage but both is nicer still.

Zetec egnines -

Early Silvertop - Ally head, iron block, single piece ally sump - (note - fitted with log plenum)

Black top - Ally head, iron block, two piece ally sump -

Zetec St170 (badged duratec) - similar to blacktop but note the different cam cover and the bulge near the can sprockets for the VCT valve (Note fitter with aftemarket exhaust and bike carbs)

if the block is alloy then it is either a Zetec SE (yamaha designed) or true Duratec and not a Zetec (silver/black or ST170).
