Dual Mass or Not- look at this picture
liam.mccaffrey - 17/11/17 at 08:37 PM

Not messed with modern flywheel/clutch setups much but would the collective say the engine in this ebay auction has a Dual mass or a single mass flywheel????

Based on the year it might be either.

Thanks in anticipation!!

Edit well it does in the first pics but second from last it looks single mass. .

Pretty sure there is a line following the bolts on the working face, dual mass to me.

He's posted the engine number, and a quick search for 'B5244S2 flywheel' seems to suggest a DMF is standard fit.

I think they all are dual mass on Volvo's of that age mine also, I have many of the manuals and haven't seen any single mass ones referenced. Seem to be well made though. Watch when you split the clutch they need a special tool to reset the internal adjuster. Not a normal clutch on them. Get a manual if you don't already as these are complex machines.

They are not all DMFs, some models of 850 V70, S70 and C70 had solid flywheels.
See this listing http://www.skandix.de/en/spare-parts/engine/engine-repair/ crankshaft/flywheel/1016656/ This is the part the Volvo fellas use to do the conversion from DMF to solid flywheel.

Tbh everything I've read about changing from DM to solid has said it was a terrible idea and very hard on the gearboxes. Just moves the problem to something even more expensive to replace. My experience has been the Volvo gearboxes are not quite up to the job or the power their engines produce so I treat mine very carefully (regular oil changes with Volvo's own oil)

They're may be markets that use a solid one but both my S60's and the 850 use DM ones, tbh never given them a second thought as they seem very reliable (if the car is driven normally)
