We're putting an St170 engine in our Avon, am i right in thinking that we have to fit a reverse running water pump or a different impeller due to
the power steering and air con pumps no longer being present.
Also what length of auxiliary drivebelt will be needed now that it doesn't have to drive the power steering and air con

Yes you need a reverse impeller if just running the belt around the crank, pump and alternator.
Belt length will depend on the pulley you use on the pump, I made one using a Zetec pump pulley.

Just fit it to a new pump.

Or you can fit an idler pulley and keep the standard impeller.
It's down to looks and packaging. If you get the reverse impeller you also need a reverse pulley.
It makes it a dear mod but a very tidy one. You can also shave the front cover for an extra clean look. I even welded a tab to the cover for the
alternator torque arm.
An idler pulley is by far the cheapest way of doing things.

The st set up pictured cost me a tenner for the belt. Torque arm was a bit of scrap plate out of the spares box as was the pulley.

New water pump ~£35 not ford but not a cheapo either. Local auto factors
