I agree with Joel.

This thread has brought to light peoples opinions of sexuality, whether they be accepting views or not. People should not be ashamed of their sexuality these days...why should they be? The only thing that puts people off coming out is the fact that they are worried about peoples opinions. I admire anyone who will proudly/openly admit they are gay/bi, we are living in the 21st century and peoples opinions shift with the times.

Its about time people started accepting eachother for who they are!

Chill out a bit... theres nothing here thats harmful to anyone!

Cheers
David

Just my 2 cents

I am surprised that this has grown to be one of the biggest threads I have seen in hear in a while.

And two I guess that when you are posting on the web about building your car the assumption is then the person on the other end is like you after all they are also interested in building a car, this is just a reminder that that is not the case and not to judge people take them for what they are.

It is also interesting to see the range of responses on the sight.

I think the fact that a teature would consider not following a particular project because there is the possibility of there being gay or bi sexual people involved very short sighted as surly that means that there are no projects that thay can follow.

PS sorry about my spelling and grammar.

I was just thinking that

Since a large % of the general poulation have had some gay/bi experience, then a % of the average meeting at Newlands etc has had some....
As has a % of the posters here.....

And as for threats of 'face to face' meetings etc....
We should be moaning about that, pathetic as it is..
You never know who you're posting about. There's at least one ex marine commando that posts here....

Personally I actually think that it's quite a valuable question that leads to a better understanding of those people building their own cars.
I haven't seen a single post here that could be construed as offensive.

My opinion of this hobby *was* that it's done by: white, middle-aged, working-to-middle class, straight, men.

I was therefore interested to see the poles awhile ago about peoples ages/jobs and found that there were as many youngsters (like me- 20's ) as there were middle-aged and that as many people do IT as there are mechanics.

As regards the results of this pole- I'm not surprised no one has yet said they're gay. I have several gay friends and having talked about this hobby with them its just not something they can even concieve of doing- much as unlike them I can't see me making my own curtains!

But then again I may only know a certain 'set' of gay people and maybe there's crowds of gay mechanics out there!

Jumpy,
As you say clearly a certain percentage of the population is gay but we're skewing the results because- as I said above- in my opinion this (in general!!!) isn't the sort of hobby done by gay men. Or atleast the ones I know!

Anyway, this is just a few opinions but I'm not very good a arguing points so I'll stop gibbering now!

I watch the Australian lists, and the USA, and have yet to encounter anything such has just occurred here. The others seem to keep to topic, and common decency. There's nothing grossly wrong in a pic of a naked female, done tastefully and forewarned.

But some of the comments previous are, quite obviously, those of juvenile minded persons.

Maybe it's time for some guidelines, and more active moderation.

I spoke to the teacher concerned this morning. His comment was to the effect that he would not want his students to come into contact with the Locost community, if the latest image is representitive of the group as a whole, and that a presumably technical list can be allowed to degrade to this. His words were that it 'says a lot about those involved'. I have to say that I agree with him.

The thing is, I know that a large number of this lists' contributors agree with me as well, but just won't stand up and say it.

Firstly what is degrading about being gay/bi? Or infact openly talking about it? Get with the times...take a look around. And i see nothing more indecent in this thread than on such as 'Poll; Mens Health' or any other that openly discuss the nature of Jordans/Janet jacksons boobs or sex in general. Maybe its just because you still see talking about homosexuality as morally wrong. If there is nothing wrong with a picture of a naked female being fore warned...whats wrong with a picture of a naked man? And it was fully fore warned and even said...you dont want to look at this (anyway its gone now)

With regard to the American and Australian forums, they also openly discuss sex etc...why shouldnt they. The fact is that most people who look at these forums are mature enough to take a sensible attitude to these topics. This topic openly states sexuality in the title...so if it offends you dont look at it!

As for speaking to the teacher...what does he have against homosexuality and it being openly discussed. I think it is about time teachers started talking about it in sex ed. Its still a taboo subject, which these days it should not be.
The list is generally technical yes...but this topic is not in the technical section its in the ANYTHING ELSE section! There is all sorts in here, can you say the penguin games are technical? Or linking to pictures of naked women are technical?

If the topic clearly states sex or sexuality and it offends you dont click it...simple.

I actually find your intolerance for open discussion about sex/sexuality more intolerable Syd, get with the times.... and more importantly chill out a bit!

this is an interesting forum, if you speak foreign. those you who don't can just look at the pictures. warning: this is a heterosexual orintated site with some adult content.

http://forum.flabber.nl/

perhaps this will bring back up the question as to whether we feel this site needs to have moderators????

There should be no need for moderators. As long people clearly state the subject matter, and post links to material that people may find offensive with a suitable warning.

This is exactly what happens on this site, i havent yet come across a thread that is intentionally misleading or that forces you to see something you dont want to. If you dont like the sound of a thread....dont click it.

Maybe a minimum age (16?) to be a member may be more appropriate?

or some sort of general disclaimer before signing up, stating you agree to x,y,z by registering to use this site?

if people have to have agreed to this, before using hte site, then tough imho. guests could also then be directed via the disclaimer or something. it could even be set by a cookie etc..

Ned.

Could be good. But IMHO i think the forum does a very good job of self policing. People soon complain if there is something wrong, and if there is enough opposition the thread or message usually dissappears.

The opions in here are the opinions of the people who write the messages. If someone doesnt agree, they can either say so or not as the case may be.

dear god, this is one of the busiest threads i've seen anywhere in quite a while.

and y'know. i'm glad i started it, it's let me certainly see that i'm not surrounded by 40+ white, hetrosexual (and while not homophobic, incapable of accepting) men.

now. syd, i'm very sorry that your kid's teacher sees this one thread, on a messageboard, in the ANYTHING ELSE section as a general view of the locost community

y'know we can't have too many openly bi/gay people interested in such manly and butch hobbies...

ok, now while having marked bisexual on the poll, when it comes down to it I am Gay. the reason i marked myself as Bi, is because it's easier than explaining stuff (i'm pretty much bi curious from the gay side)

ok, that's syd/teacher, sexuality. what else?

ahh yes.

thanks to all the open minded people who can see this thread as an insight into who were are as a group and idividuals, i owe you a pint.

edit: moderation is in my opinion a bad idea.

say... what if syd or hippy was a mod? this thread would be long gone, and we'd lose this whole, interesting insight into the community we have here.

See- this sort of discussion blows prejudices out of the water! SO it must be good! That's mine about no gay Locosters gone then!

I still reckon you 2/3 are a rarity tho!
It's just not in the whole 'gay culture' thing that I'm aware of!

ChrisW has moderated stuff before but only in a moderate ( :p ) way. The way it was done on TOL was ridiculous- every other post was being chopped out!

Roll on posts like this- Locostbuilders provides me with the only entertainment during an otherwise empty 8.5hours per day sitting at this God forsaken desk/office!

i think the mostly gay (but not 100%) are in the majority reallly, it's just that due to our society's habit of putting things into subsections, when explaining sexualities it's easier to pick hetro/bi/gay than "well, i'm mostly gay, but i'm attracted to women who i like and care about as friends, but then i'm not sure if i find other women attractive as well"

you just look out, if i see you face to face, i might just be force to do that

indeed, some moderation is good, but overmoderation is bad, as far as i know this thread has stayed within the unspoken rules, and only a small number of people have taken offence

also i'd like to see ChrisW's view on the matter, but more as a member rather than godadmin

I think this site should stay as it is, i have been a member here for almost a year, although not as long as most i still feel i know how it works. The posts self moderated really, if a member sees something they dont like they will say about it, and if people dont agree there will be a debate, normally it is resolved. As for guests and such seeing stuff they dont like, if everything is put in the appropriate forum and labeled (no open links), there shouldnt be a problem. I was a member of clubGTI and their forum was awful, so many posts got deleted or edited, sounds abit like TOL. During the time ive been using this forum i dont think ive seen something that offended me or i thought was very unappropriate.

Also since ive been here i have never seen any pictures of hetero sex (maybe i havent been looking hard enough!) I think most people are getting annoyed as the picture was of gay sex, (although it was clearly linked and warned about). Im sure they wouldnt have minded if u had linked to picture of some blokes bum or something.

Anyways, i dont think we should be worried about the gay community on this site, more the the ones who chose the "other" column!!!
