How much for a Zetec

Hi guys
I'm replacing the very shagged out Pinto in my Robin hood with (hopefully) a 1.8 or 2.0 Zetec engine. How much should I be looking to pay? All the ones on ebay seem to be pretty expensive (or too far away from me) considering brand new ones are about £750.
If anyone knows of one going near Caterham in Surrey, I would love to know. I would post this inthe Wanted section, but haven't posted enough stuff to be allowed to yet!

paid £100 2 years ago for a 1.8 from a breakers, you could pick an early mondeo up for around £150 £200 then you get everything. The Escort ones are the better ones as they have a shallower sump (so u may not have to chop yours) and the water pump runs the correct way round so dont need to shange that pluss I think you can even shoe horn the standard inlet and injection in. You cant do that with a mondeo unit. the !.8 is slower but can take the 2 litre cams plus the flywheel is lighter

i went to an old school scrappy got on my arse with my mate £50... for that i got everything minus cat and box (2.0 silver top)! Didnt take the ECU etc but everything attached to the engine was mine.

S'wot I paid, along with a load of other bits (steel sump, spare head, RWD starter etc.) on ebay for mine.

They are around, have a search on ebay for "mondeo breaking" or "escort breaking".

I paid £200 for my first 1.8, £10 for the next one then 99p for another off the bay.

Spotted a nice low mileage Mondeo in the salvage yard and he said I could have everything under the bonnet for £200!

Worth looking out for a mot failure whole car as well, missed a £100 Mondeo a while ago.... I've past up at least another 5 engines for peanuts since then.

Go for one out of an Escort to start with, if you can get one cheap, even just for the sump, water pump and spare bits then its worth getting a 2L to swap the 1.8 parts onto.

Just be aware its an Escort 1.8 you need as the 1.8 Mondy is different ((bigger sump)

I paid £120 for a silvertop 1.8 105ps XR3i with a blown head gasket off ebay.
Was going to strip the engine anyway so didn't matter that the gasket had gone.

The XR3i had brand new (around £200)low profile tyres that are currently sitting on my Ford Puma. When the Puma tyres went it seemed pointless paying £200 to get them done when the XR's were sitting doing nowt. I still have the XR3i bucket seats in my shed (thinking of making a games settee out of them!!)

Managed to sell some the rest of the car (lights, exhaust, petrol tank) back on ebay for £35 and got the head skimmed for free in work. I have also used a lot of the loom in my project.

Managed to get the 130ps rated cams on ebay for £30, and am using Megajolt so stock ecu doesn't matter.

In all I reckon I am around £85 up due to the brand new tyres that were on it, and I still got the 130 ps silvertop with the short sump.

I would always buy the whole car, you can get a lot more out of it.

Paid £79 for 2.0 litre silver top zetec on ebay.

Didn't include either manifold, but did include sensors and clutch.

1.8 fly wheel and clutch plate good move as well as its about 2kg lighter than the 2.0 litre.

Friend who has tried light weight flywheel recons the 1.8 flywheel is better if a mix of road and track use proposed. Light weight fly wheel to much of an on off effect for comfortable road use.

1.8 water pump from ebay £15.

3 part ford clutch assembly £40. Again why bother with race clutch when these are designed to take a 1.5 ton car and tow a caravan, easily cope with kit car weight and power.

ARP conrod bolts fitted. (Only weak point).

Remember to use the correct grade oil or hydraulic lifters stick.

I am just finishing converting my 1.6 cvh to zetec.

About £2200 so far including exhaust, twin 45's maniifolds, ecu, cooling, clutch etc.

Most bits second hand.
