Fireblade oil pressure

Good evening...

I am new to the site and am the owner of a very nice MK indy with the 893 fireblade lump..

I have been checking over a few items and have noticed the oil pressure gauge goes off the scale (max) when the engine is started. If i disconnect the wire from the sender unit the gauge will go back to zero. The gauge maxes out at 90psi.

What pressure should the engine be at during idle and what could be the potential problems?

Many thanks

Jon

Hi and welconme aboard.
The info suggests 71psi at 6000rpm.

I guess at start up and cold it could go off the calse for a second but I'd expect it to settle very quickly

Thanks for the quick reply...

It just goes off the gauge and stays there...

I would suggest a faulty gauge or sensor. Where abouts in Kent are you?

Yep^^^
They did'nt have them as standard so must be aftermarket.
Could also be oil too thick, knackered oil filter stuck pressure relief valve.

Quick replies...
Hey we don't mess around here mate

Tell us more about your Indy, did you build or buy, show us some pics....

I planned to change the oil/filter etc ASAP anyway. how hard is it to change the pressure relief valve?

I have only had the car a couple of weeks and havnt driven it "properly" yet...
Bought it from a famous auction website... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MK-INDY_W0QQitemZ160309674619QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAutomobiles_UK?hash=item160309674619&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3 A2%7C65%3A3%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318

Got a few plans for it... already taken off the screen and aim to fit a new Aero screen from MK.
The steering is aweful 4.4 turns lock to lock, so a quick rack will be needed me thinks?

many thanks again

Have a measure up before you buy a quick rack, sometimes these are shortened to erradicate bump steer and escort or sierra could be used.

So picture with measurements to your new supplier.

Very smart funny it didn't get a Kwak engine too
4.4 turns does seem excessive, carefull you don't go too quick though and make it twicchy
PRV is just taking the sump off IIRC

4.4 turns souns to me as if there is no steering lock limiter in the rack. ( to stop brakes hoses fouling on wishbones on full lock)
that's why I don't have a oil pressure gauge just the red light when I've got no pressure,

Thats alot of motor for that money! Looks spotless too!!

Mines a 918 and runs about 70 odd when warm (to my knowledge) can check if you get stuck although as mentioned think its a sticky sensor

Enjoy!!

The gauge did work when i went for a pre sale test drive. It was at about 30 ish on idle but i didnt take too much notice thereafter...

Ive also rewired all of the instruments as there were bare wires behind the clocks (thought something maybe shorting out) . It was a very amateur looking job to be honest.

it now looks much better and its also labelled where needed.

Gonna try and get the sump off at the weekend and check the pressure relief valve? Anyone got any tips on what to check?
Also the cam chain needs adjusting, so i will adress that also...

I woud'nt rush to take the sump off, I 'd be checking the sensor first, it's got to be easier?

Also what are your symptoms for the cam chain needing adjusting?

Check the wiring to the sensor too. It's basically just a pull-down resistance to earth, so if it's not grounded perfectly you'll get artificially high readings.

Checking the cam chain tension due to a top end rattle from the right hand side...

The engine already has had the manual tensioner conversion done, so i want to check the state of the chain also.

I am also keen to take off the sump to see if it has been modified/baffled? i dont suppose there is any other way of knowing without removal?

The previous owner couldnt tell me anything technical about the car at all!!
