Exhaust getting too hot?
Hi all,
Just started the engine again, after having to modify the exhaust to clear the bodywork...
Was running the engine at about 2K (running in the new cam), and after about 5 minutes, I spotted that the wrapping on the exhaust (where the 3 &
4 pipes touch) was glowing red! Any ideas what might cause this?
wrong mixture?
wrong advance?
valve clearences?
all of the above?
The engine hasn't been properly tuned yet, but I wasn't expecting this kind of heat out of it!
It's a Pinto with 285 cam, GSXR throttle bodies and Megasquirt btw.

Running lean or retarded ignition can both give a glow to the exhaust.

i would check the ignition timing as i had the same problem on my v6,i recon the headers must have been nearly white hot under the wrap.my timing was
miles off

If you have a timing light check that the ignition timing is advancing as it should. Not unknown for the advance /retard mechanism to sieze
