Different Zetec engines?

I'm running an 1800 Zetec lump in my GTS, from a mid '93 Mondeo (I believe) backed up by a letter from Ford with the engine number. Donor car for most other bits was an early '93 Sierra 2.0i. Aside from the fact this restricts me putting my L-reg private plate on it, I'm curious about the block itself.

Now doing my research I've come across the different tpes of Zetec block used in 1800's, with 105, 115, and 130bhp. I know the 130bhp lumps were usid in the Escort GTi's, but what is the difference in lumps? I read that a lot of you put 130 cams into the 115 for a bit of a power boost, but what other differences are there?

In terms of my engine, does anyone know what power it has, or how to tell? And Can I exchange parts such as cams from higher-spec engines to get a little more out of it?

Just for reference, I'll be running ZX9R carbs and megajolt, if that makes any difference.

Looking forward to replies!

The code on the engine will tell you what car it came from and what spec.

And I believe that the differences are teh cams (also ecu/throttle body etc on the original engine)

Running carbs and the better cams should give around 150bhp, (depending which RR/tyres/temp etc )

About the only differance between the lower and higher powered 1.8 blocks are the under piston oil cooling gets.

You want a set of 2.0 cams to go with your carbs and Mjl and you should see 150bhp+

I wouldnt bother with any of the 130 spec bits as they tend to cost more than there worth.

I have used 1.8 silvertops from an Escort and Mondeo, there is a little bit of difference in the blocks, down where you would put the engine mounts in a RWD car but nothing huge.

Mondeo engines have bigger sumps than Escorts.

I used 2L cams from a Mondeo engine in my Escort 1.8, all silvertop 1.8 & 2.0 cams swap round no problem.

With 2L cams in my 1.8 with ZX9R carbs and Megajolt it had 155bhp (flywheel) on the rollers, 120bhp at the wheels.

Check my blog out...

We've fitted 2.0 cams to our 1.8 105 (from XR2). Fitted fine, having said that we haven't run it yet though!
