Arrgh how are you meant to decide between BEC and CEC?

Depends what you want.

If you want a car for longish journeys which is easy to drive and reliable go for a car engine.

If you want a track day car for short runs which is hard work to drive build a bike engined one.

Having driven both, and the sort of driving I do, I know which I prefer

On top of Flak's excellent guide.

Cost - BEC's tend to cost a little more than CEC's installed - especially now IVA requires a reverse of some kind.

How much power do you want? Once above 175-200bhp CEC's rule, up to that BEC's are in their sweetpoint. How much power you can usefully use in a 7 is debatable of course.

Noise - BEC's are marmite here. Do you love the sound of F1, Touring cars or NASCAR?

The only real answer is down to you, everyone else is just spouting their own personal prejudices.
