Prop / Diff / axle annoyance
Hi people, bear with me!
Point 1: I've had some problems today that've put me out a little to say the least...
Having left getting a propshaft made until everything else was done I rang a few places to see what was what, I realised that the vaux omega gearbox
was a bit of an oddball I knew prices might be higher than most but £250+vat etc seems to be the average price quoted
The problem is the flange that pokes out of the gearbox housing, its a 3 bolt affair with a locating lug sticking out of it that locates inside a lug
on the original propshaft.
Eventually sorted out with an 'often mentioned on here' company that if I supplied an Omega propshaft, they could use bits of it and bring
the price down by half(ish) and also that I could indeed use the rubber donut much to my surprise..
Anyway, I just got an Omega prop delivered (£40) and rang them back to order.. Spoke to a different more knowlegable guy who said no way could I use
the rubber donut (as I first suspected) and that having the Omega prop was of no use to them, so thats money down the drain The price then went
back up..dohh!
Why can't it just be made the same as a normal prop but have the end of my omega prop substituted at the gearbox end and a ally spacer where
the rubber donut took up space? In the order:
Spacer - Omega flange - uj - main shaft with slider - uj - diff flange?
I can't see how it's different to a normal flanged propshaft apart from an ally spacer ?
Anyway, point 2:
While talking to the knowlegable guy I mentioned the size of the flange on my diff being 85mm:
I'd always assumed it was a typical english live axle/diff under there but he says nope, much smaller and weaker but wasn't sure what it
was off, anyone have a clue what it may be off?:
(crap pic, but all I could find till I take more later if needed )
Any help appreciated!
Cheers
Kev

The English axle has two different flange sizes, you have the smaller one (same as mine). They can be changed, but you should set up the pinion
bearing preload using a new crush tube if you do this.

Ahh I see, if thats true I'll be much happier, thanks.
Is there any advantage swapping for the bigger flange?
The guy suggested that as my flange is small it was probably an 1100cc escort van axle or similiar and hence too weak for 180 odd bhp which is what
worried me.
I know nothing about axles
Ps. are you sure yours is only 85mm across too?
He did seem bemused at my Saab engine choice too and suggested its easier to buy a brand new 450bhp engine for a mere £4.5k from somewhere I didnt
hear properly as I was nearly choking on the other end of the phone, lol.
