minilites suitable offset for indy?

Ok been hankering after a set of 13" minilites or similar style for the indy for a while, but not found any with the right (FWD/Sierra 38?) offset

How bad would it be to use a set with the RWD Ford offset (19?)

I did once borrow a MK1 Escort/Capri 4 spoke to see if the Ford RWD offset wheels would physically fit over the brakes, which they did...just and IIRC it looked like it would need a couple or more of cm extra width adding to the rear arches, and moving the front wings out by the same ammount

But handling wise??
/REALLY/ bad move as well as much hassle?

Hopefully going to grab some steelies from work - donor will be a KA or Fiesta, just to see if 13's look daft, though I guess they are going to come with skinny tyres and will be limited to what will fit on a 5" rim (175x 60 at a push?)

Never seen Minilites or copies with FWD offsets....too old skool? looking in the wrong places?

Poniters/advice/opinions sought

Mine are old school offset, I cannot comment on the arches as mine were all made to suit but you do not need to worry about protecting the bearings etc as the cars are so light.

Be careful about fitment before yous splash cash, my minilites have 'performance' cast in them, this is apparantly a good thing, but two have grp4 inserts and are rough cast on the inside, these are slightly smaller on the inside than the other two, these have a turned inside, even then I had to relieve the sierra rear caliper to fit inside.

Try before you buy, I also got hold of some 4 spoke revolution wheels from an escort, these were not even close on the calipers!

13" look best anyway, just make sure the arches wrap them closely.

Benefits of 13"

much cheaper tyres
Much gripper tyres available easily
Taller side walls so better comfort and handling
Does not look like a rollerskate
Light

Against

Check rear calipers fit
Nothing else, 13" wheels rock!

You might struggle with the 13's minilights on an Indy.

I went through the minilights, revolutions route trying to find a combination that worked and couldn't do it. Either wrong offsets or nowhere near enough clearance. Ended up going with Compomotive CXR's.

I have the Team Dynamics pro race 2 13" bought from mac1motors.

They are 6" wide with an offset of 35 and everyone has commented how good they look.

Current tyre combo is R888's;

Front 185/60/13

Rear 205/60/13

There is plenty of tyre options for the front tyre but the rear is very limited. When I change it will be 185's all round

As said, the offset won't daage the bearings because of the lightness of these cars.

However, you would need to consider the impact on the scrub offset due to the change in the centre line of the tyre in relation to the king pin inclination.

Having said that, I haven't yet measured what the scrub offset is using standard sierra steel wheels - might be that a different offset might be a good thing...

Your main problem in fitting a ET 18 or 19 on a Indy is that it won't fit within the rear arch,they will be about 15mm too wide,you will also just have to adjust your front arches to suit,but if you want to go that ET you now can with the Indy by fitting the extra wide rear arches they now supply,as fitted the there race cars,these arches are now a popular choice with all the new kits being sold,as it gives you a wider choice of rims,and these lower ET's are also alot of the time a fair bit cheaper.

Just picked up a set of 13" rims from a nice chap on here
Not the Minilites I wanted, but a set that look just like RS 4 spokes...so deffo old skool and 13"

the offset is almost the same as the 14" they will replace
14"'s were et41 and the new set are et32

Tried the bare rims under front and rear arches, and depending on what tyres get fitted I may get away with it- perhaps some thick tadpole trim at the rear? and maybe a smack with a hammer on the cycle wing stays will sort it

Will pop some 185 and 195 rubber on em tomorrow at work and see how close it is
Depending on how "bulgy" the walls are I may get away with it as the bare rims are deffo not peeking out from the rear

I assume 60 profile is the norm?

Incidentally when I changed the rear wheel for the test rim
one of my rear tyres (semperit speed comfort) has grown a tumourous bulge on the side wall ...so a pretty good job I spotted it and handily have a fresh set of rims at the ready! (and a good excuse to mrs cog that a fresh set of rubber is needed rather just a whim!)

Going to take it back to the tyre shop as its not that old or worn and looks like something very bad has gone wrong with it from whithin
would be messy if that let go I guess

Just thought I'd report on my findings
MK Indy (Sierra hubs)
Was running 195/60 r14's with 41 offset
Now running 185/60 r13's with 32 offset

All corners fit under the arches...just, but as the wheels are a little bit smaller not going to rub by the looks of it

Took her out for a quick spin round the block to remove the writing off the tyre treads (we use a grease pen to mark them up and spin the cack stuck in the treads prior to getting them balanced tomorrow)

Steering feels completely "different" almost as if I could have been running a quick rack before and now it has been removed :-(

first corner kind of took me by surprise at how much extra steering input it took!
Going to drive it a bit more over the next few weeks before condemning it as a bad idea...maybe I just need to get used to moving the wheel more?

or I now need a quickrack to compensate! :-)

Will keep an eye on how the fronts are wearing

The old Semperits I was running on the rears have a real odd wear on them -

The middles have worn faster than the outer edges- and I assumed they were hardly worn in my last posting(due to only seeing the edges), but am just kissing the wear indicators in the center of the tyre

Off the car the wear is dead obvious with a huge dip in the middles of the treads (so they are v shaped!)

have I been running over inflated? (17-19psi)
or just too "floppy" a tyre?
or high speed motorway miles killed em so quick?

(they were the lighteast tyre I could find when going round the tyre shop picking tyres up and made my choice this way)

New tyres are a bit "chunkier" and the sidewalls feel sturdier and dont flop about the way the Semperits did
