sorry long post

I am using a (as you probably all have guessed by now) 2.0L Zetec connected to sierra type 9 gearbox. Using 1.8 Escort Zetec flywheel.

I thought I had this one sorted but doubt has crept in. Based on information from the Westfield forum, the local motor factor sold me a Remy-Delco unit DRS 3468 (Sierra 1.8 CVH, 1988), this is the same as a Lucas LRS 707. However since the I have found much more conflicting information.

the problem is that I am sure ANY Ford starter would fit the type nine box 9 all seem to have the same bolt pattern and number of pinion teeth), it is the "throw" that is worrying me. I really don't want to ruin the ring gear and have to take the engine and box out to replace it.

so on the whole it LOOKS like I have the right starter. Has anyone done this and made sense out of the Lucas Ford Other part numbers ?

Failing this how do I measure the starter "throw" and check this against the flywheel gearbox distance to make sure it is right ?

I cannot really tell you if all the options you mentioned will work. I can only tell you how i did this.

To measure the throw, simply pull the geared cog as far out as it will come, and measure from the flange of the starter motor to the gear wheel, then with the engine and gearbox mated together measure from the bellhousing to the flywheel gear ring.

I used a 2.0litre DOHC starter, which mates nicely to the orginal flywheel from the focus.

Probably of no use what so ever....

cvh sierra never had mt75 gearbox that was only on the 2.0 4x4/rwd, 2.9 4x4 and the 4x4 cosworth.

also cvh was OHC aswell

not to sure on which starter motor you need, but if you had used the 2wd MT75 gearbox, then you'd have no problems as you would have been using a 2wd dohc sierra starter

Hmm, I have the same engine and as of tomorrow hopefully the same gearbox , and according to my information, the part that really works (a friend of mine has used this, on a 1.8 Zetec with type 9 box) is: starter ford part.nr 87BB11000JB
( is Bosch.nr 0 001 108 083) of a sierra 2.0 OHC (mot.type NES from 1987).

This works on his car (he is dutchsuperseven on this forum, see gallery). As far as I know, the 2.0 L and 1.8L Zetecs are more or less exactly the same on the outside, so this should work...At least, that's what I intend to try!

I will be doing some ringing round to try and locate something like what you describe.

measured the throw of the starter and the bell housing > flywheel distance.
The distance seems to be OK the Remy-Delco unit DRS 3468 (Sierra 1.8 CVH, 1988) Lucas LRS 707 I have. I going to take a chance and see it if works.

Presumably by now you have done it mr givemethebighammer, but you are right it is the 1800 CVH engined sierra starter that you need, basically because the Zetec used most of the same dimensions as the CVH, which is why things like starters swap over.

This forum is great, but there are a lot of people offering advice who have not done the jobs in question and the advice is often wrong!! Sorry but I keep reading incorrect info!!

PS yes I have used a CVH starter with a Zetec, in a front drive escort but it does fit!!

Anyone any idea what starter to use with mondeo 1.8 zetec and type 9 box. pinto and cvh starters all foul on th ally sump.

Don't you have to " relieve" sump to get clearance for starter? Sure I have read a post on here somewhere to that effect

i have heard some file the sump down a bit but some also cut the sump and TIG another piece of flat ali in to make the room
