Freelander buying advice
Daughter is considering buying a Freelander, I'm sure I've read about some weaknesses, but cant find anything now.
Any advice on what to watch out for would be greatfully received.

Not all are 4WD.
I knew someone who had to pay for a new engine fairly soon after buying a used one, but andyB on here has one and he said its really good.
I had a defender 90 and it was the nuts, but then the defender is an off road vehicle. The freelander isnt so much.

Please please advise your daughter not to buy one! They are terrible machines and are forever in the garage.
Problems you may incure are Diffs, centre prop problems, Turbo, injectors!!
all cost silly money to put right.
I dont understand why people buy them especially if they have ever test driven one.
Hope she does they right thing and stays well clear. a much better alternative would be a Rav4 d4d or petrol.

We have one, the best advice I can give is don't let your daughter buy one!
I must admit it is OK, but there are far too many problems with them

Dont do it good ones are few and far between and the rest are a load of crap

TD4 is ok stay well away from Petrol ones, if you do look at any make sure the rear prop is fitted as they get removed to hide peoblems. I've
done over 15K in mine in the last 12 months (88K on the clock) also now reccommend the the engine breather filter is changed on every service
it's not listed on the schedule.
My lad works for a Land Rover dealer so get a good price on bits.

my friend had one, when he complained to the garage that it was forever breaking, the mechanic just laughed and said 'its definately off road
now!'

I am Pete's son-in-law, ty for the advice against the Freelander. What we need is a car (£5k budget) that will hold 3 adult mountain bikes and
also camping equipment. Any suggestions ? Our lass doesn't want to drive a "tank"

TD4's are probs ok apart from the engine and the drive train.
My mate is a landrover indy, his advice is dont buy one.

As per my earlier post I have a Freelander and also a Passat estate, I can get twice as much camping stuff in the back of the Passat than the
Freelander and also it can easily fit 3 bikes on the roof.
Although my Passat is only a couple of years old, the estate option may be a better buy for your £5k.

the wife has had hers 3 years now and has put another 30k on the clock while shes had it , only had a water pump and a set of brakes so i cant
complain about them

Passat tdi sport estate..... great cars, the older ones upto 2005 are better made than the newer ones. I've had a few of both.
A6 avant/estate..... more room than the passat inside, cost more to buy but they hold their money like you wouldn't believe.
Accord estate/tourer..... friends had one a year, done 40k in a year with no problems at all. Very nice spec. honda engine with a camchain....
enough said!
I've had all the above bar an accord and now i've got a a6 estate again. good mixture off all of them.

Did you ever get the Honda Element in Britain? Be perfect for your daughter's intended use. Toyota FJ Cruiser might do as well, but it could be
tough to find one in your price range as they've only be sold for a few years.

For the price you want to pay I would recommend a nissan terrano or the equivalent ford maverick. I had a nissan for a couple of years and no
problems at all. They do them in long and short wheel base. Very capable off road. I would go for the diesel, which gives you around 30mpg no
matter how you drive it.
