New brakes

OMG!
Just swapped my old Sierra master cylinder for a Fiat item (cheapo eBay job) , mounted a remote reservoir (Daihatsu HiJet)
Swapped the vented disks for Sierra solids
Changed the calipers from vented Sierra to solid KA, and treated it to new Mintex 1144's as the greenstuffs I was running were a different shape/size

Just come in from bleeding the fronts

It would have been rude not to give em a prod...so rolled it forwards and gave it a prod...
Nearly broke my nose on the steering wheel, wasn't expecing it to bite quite like that, especially as I had just had a hose on the car to wash the inevitable spillage I couldn't see in the dark

I'm going to have to put a post it note on the steering wheel for its first shakedown after the changes...or fit a thick spongy pad to the pedal

From it needing a healthy prod to get wheels to lock it now feels overbraked from the short tests I just did

Hoping they will soften a little with use
Especially now it starting to get cold and damp!

Master cylinder was 22, now 19 IIRC
Disk diameters are the same
Pad surface area is a little smaller than they were by the looks of it

Pedal pivot/ratio/length is the same.. as nothing got changed other than a de rust and lick of paint

Thought it would be of interest
Seemingly a world of difference for very little outlay

Sierra Solid Disks £5 each
KA calipers - free
hijet reservoir £5
pads £5 - no one else bid so it was 99p and £4 postage
Fiat master cylinder £15

...throwing the battery off the bulkhead and nearly taking my face out on the steering wheel....priceless

Regards
Rob

I'm in the middle of installing a Fiat non-servo M/C as well, so this is reassuring!

Hopfully mine will improve as well. though I'm keeping the same calipers and disks.

No pics yet
Got Thursday off so should get a chance to photograpah the pre-winter mods and give it a shakedown

Only just discovered ACF50
Seems to be working well so far
Hopefully it wont get in such a rotten state so fast

Hi,
is there any modification required for the caliper change?
Cheers

Nope, no mods required
KA claipers just bolt straight up to the Sierra hub
I used a Sierra Solid disk, but there were a few other options that were as good as identical...
It just so happened I scored a new pair of Sierra solids at £5 a pop because the packaging was a bit chuffed and the guy was local enough for me to collect in person

I did end up replacing my braided hoses (bought from Mr Russ Bost on here) as my old ones seemed just a little shorter with the new calipers ...but the engine wasn't in and possibly wasn't completely necessary, but worth while as the new hoses are just lush compared to the old ones (highly recomend his services!)

Will report back on how well the new setup really works on Thursday assuming the weather is not too bad and I get the rest of the stuff bolted up and the wings glued back on :-)

My guess is that its the smaller bore of the master cylinder that has made the most dramatic difference to the setup

That looks like a good buy - mine was £19 plus vat. It also appears to have 10x1.25 thread on the inlets so I need to change the unions on my brake pipes which is a bit of a pain.
