shortening the sump c20xe

Ok, Im going to shorten the sump. -

I've got the original ally one and a steel one (from an 8 valve - obtained from this site).

The ally one has an oil level sensor which has to be removed - no room for it.

The idea is that it is easier to cut and weld the steel one than the ally - I'm not much of a welder - but I know a guy who is!

I have had a suggestion to screw the top of the sump to a piece of worktop to prevent distortion - sounds like a good idea.

OK.....

Questions for you knowledgeable locost guys.............

1... what do I do about the oil level sensor - just short the contacts? (I'm using standard ecu / injector set up).
2.... what sort of baffling do I need to add?
3.... what about the dipstick - no, I don't mean me, I mean the original one!

Any other guidance / info will be most welcome.

Thanks in advance, Steve.

Hi Steve this is mine:

1. Not sure what you do about the oil level sensor on the ecu, I just took mine out.

2. you can see the baffling Trev D added above, the side "pods" are also drilled through rather than being open

3. The dipstick doesnt measure the entire depth of the sump, so if you add back the same volume to the sides then the original dipstick should still be fine for checking the level.

to add:

you'll need to relocate the sump plug of course and you do need to add back the volume you take away else you'll get all sorts of problems

finally, the last picture just shows that you also have to shorten the oil pickup pipe (just cut a chunk out then braze it back together) as it is designed to take oil from the bottom of the sump, which is now higher than it was before.

hope this makes sense.

Sorry for the thread hijack but does your sump mods work CD thompson??

I have modded mines twice but still have oil surge ( lack of pressure) under heavy/prolonged breaking.
I'll post some pics later if I can find them.

If it looks wrong it probably is wrong.

The oil level sensor was never connected to the ecu in the first place. so just throw it away!

The steel sump cut to 110mm will be level with the bottom of the type 9 box and give you just under 4 litres capacity inc filter to max on the standard dipstick. You can add a wing on the side to get the capacity back up to 4.5 litres, but do not overfill as this will lead to the crank aerating the oil.
Use 3mm steel plate for the new bottom, mine is in a Robin Hood 2B, bigger than most 7s with 75mm clearance under the sump and it has a few battle scars from hiiting the road etc, I think an alloy one would have cracked lookin at some of the scars on the steel
