track car dilemma

Hi all, been racking my brains for a while now about my next track / weekend car and have two choices (at the mo).

Another 205 mi16 or a fiat coupe 20v turbo

I also ready have the tuning bits to have a 180bhp 205. The coupe is easly tunable to 300 bhp but its a weight thing as you all know.

The 205 180 bhp / 900 kg = 200 bhp/t

20v coupe 300 / 1310 kg = 229 bhp/t

Now the 205 top speed will be about 135mph and the coupe 155-160.

I don't know anything about the coupe for cornering or braking but I do know the 205 which is very good the only thing I can remember from my last one (160bhp) is that it got to 100mph v.very quick but then took an age to get any more.

The coupe Iam quessing would'nt be as goog in the corners / under braking but should have the 205 on top end and with about 380-400 Nm of torque should pull upto and over 100mph better than the 205???????

Any ideas or too make things worse any other car suggestions.....

Cheers

Jools

205 easy choice.

very fast in corners with R888's or slicks.
you can make 220BHP and strip the weight out of the car to 750KG's

mine used to beat ferrari 355's on a regualr basis at track and sprint events

fiat will be no where near on lap times

Having owned a 205 Mi16 and a Fiat Coupe 20VT I feel qualified to comment. The 205 was track prepped, the Coupe was standard (brand new at the time).

In a straight line it would be no contest, although the gearing on the Coupe is a bit long which blunts performance. However, in the twisties the Coupe would have understeered off into a hedge while the 205 disappeared into the distance. I have no doubt you could improve things, get the body roll under control and sharpen up the turn in but it would be polishing a turd in track terms.

If I wanted an 90s turbo car for track use then a Nissan 200sx or an MR2 turbo would be in the queue before a Fiat.

Tyre costs on Fiat Coupes are quite high for day-to-day use. I suspect you will eat lots of fronts on the track.

depends a bit on what tracks you do, tight twisty or ones with long straights where power might be an advantage, i still prefer the small and nippy

something different on piston heads at mo
Audi A4 track car

I would like to know the fiat's weight if you strip it down.

Although, not a personal fan of Peugeots but on a track i would love it a lot more than the Fiat.

I'd go for the PUG. Lighter and more agile.

Curved ball reply.
MX5 - lots about, easy to tune, REAR WHEEL drive, open top motoring - sweet chassis - active owners club - you either love 'em or hate 'em. Stick on a blower or turbo (if you must) and watch it go.
Guess where I'm thinking of going next after the F27?

I dont know why people consider fwd cars at all for tracks. Rwd is more fun and easier to control imho.

If it had to be one of those two however, i would go for the 205, no contest.

How long can i resist the temptation to drop a V8 in?

Of the two my choice would be Pug every time.

On the other hand the MX-5 is quite compelling.

Have a word with Avoneer on this site - he built two 7s then switched to an MX-5 and fitted a turbo. Cheap and cheerful little cars these days and mechanically sounder than the French or Italian offerings as well. The RWD element goes without saying really.

A mate of mine has a sprint prepared early 90s Civic and in the right hands round Combe on a charity day it was running circles round all sort of supposedly faster or more exoctic cars. Lots to do with the drivers ability and total lack of concern for the car being thrashed to 11/10ths of its abilities!

He's selling it with a spare engie and spare wheels etc and I'm seriously tempted myself as an alternative to the Striker for a year.

FWD yeeeeeees do it,I love my little Clio, like the 205's,they are light,so they have a good power to weight ratio, handle well, cheap on tyres, brakes etc,the only reason I went for a Clio 172,over the 205,is that it has 170bhp as standard,so no need to have to do the MI16 conversion, and no rust, some of the 205's are over 20 years old now,I looked at one with rust around the rear of the sills, put me off a bit,I could buy alot newer car for my money,my year 2000 172 cost me £1500,here's mine in action at Cadwell, they are alot of fun.

205's are great fun but nissan 200sx would be my choice for similar money.Maybe not ultimately as quick on twisty bits as a well sorted 205,but will eat them anywhere else, and 300bhp is easily achieved quite cheaply, and nothing puts a bigger grin on my face than power on tail out tomfoolery! (s14's all come with lsd too)

mx5 would get my money, although i've got one as a DD....

a standard 1.6 mx5 with 888s is an absolute hoot on track. i did some laps round donington in one with 888 SGs and it was absolutely fantastic.

me and avoneer drive his and so far have done cadwell, croft, donington, elvington, mallory and oulton.

we're back at oulton next friday with 11psi from the t25 and 888s. i can't wait. even when pat's was standard 115bhp we put a lot of stuff to shame.
