Mk2 Escort Steering rack repair, replace or other options?

I have a Mk2 escort rack on the stylus and it has a little bit of play in it, if i stand in front of the car and pull the fronts of the wheels together they will move inwards a small amount.

Is there something in the end of the rack that gets worn and is easy to replace or should i just get a new one or is there an replacement that fits that is better. Its a 2.4 turn.

Any suggestions welcome.

Thank
Tony

the ball joints on the ends of the arms where they meet the rack itself could have worn...

or it could be the ball joints on the outer ends could need replacing, which would be easy enough

you could go around replacing all the bit til you end up with basically a new rack... i'd just replace. then maybe rebuild the old one to sell

there's a threaded cap ball joint on each end. Knock out / drill out the split pin, replace the grease and then screw each cap back on till their movable but firm to swivel.

Then replace the split pin. Very easy job indeed.

Also a good time to check or adjust the rack free play, remove a shim at a time to adjust.

Don't make it so tight it’s difficult to turn, should just feel like a normal new car and mind to check at both extents of the rack travel as they tend to get worn in the middle so you can easily make it too tight at full lock. All plenty of Moly grease too before putting the boots back on.

thanks guys, so to a lay person. I havent taken a rack apart before, i will rmeove the boots and see, the ball joints on the end of the track control arms are fine, the play seems to be on the inner end of the arms, there doesnt seem to much free play when turning the steering wheel, its just on the arms themselves.

Once i remove the gators, what is underneath? when you say threaded cap ball joint, what is that?, i have searched for pictures but cant find any.
