Insurance for 17 year old
My son is 17 shortly and have been looking around for insurance for a Mitsubishi Colt 1.3. I am getting quotes of over £3000 by using the comparision
sites.
Any ideas where I can try to get a cheap (but good quality) quote from?

Quinn direct in his own name. Or try the likes of admiral/elephant if hes going to be a named driver.

Its going to be stupid money no matter where you go, From looking for my 18 y/o brother £3K seems about right. Becareful with insuring a car as a
learner, as it will shoot up by a huge amount when he passes his test. A mate at work had insurance with someone who specialised in learner insurance
and his doubled when he passed his test (and remeber you have to pay penalties to cancel an insurance policy).
I don't want to scare you or put you off, just sharing somethings I've learnt. To be completely honest though, I wouldn't bother,
every year you wait will make it alot cheaper.

Yes insurance does go up when they pass their test - I insured my Lad with Quinn as the named driver and me as the main. We both had to start with no
NCB, my NCB being on my car.
Good thing about Quinn is that the named driver also gets NCB built up.
I got him a 1.0 Saxo - the insurance cost £650 aprox to insure third party then it when down to about £425 after the first year and then it went up by
£110 when he passed.
God knows what it will be when he tries to insure himself, probably go through the roof.
However, there is an issue insuring this way, you have to prove he is not the main driver of the car, easy for me because he is at Uni in Newcastle,
car is here - if you cant demonstrate this its called fronting and is fraud!.

My 17 yr old has been trawling the insurance web sites for ages now and 3k is a common figure.
£650 on a provisional.

As already said Quinn direct was the cheapest for my lad, but it did double when he passed his test (fiesta 1.25 £900) Girls on the other hand seem to
get it much cheaper. My niece has just insured a Fiesta for £475 again with Quinn.
Lots of stories about Quinn being bad to deal with but if you 3rd party then it's not a real problem, my other lad was with them when he had a
accident but he didn't have any problems.

Slight diversion - going through the same thing with 21 yo daughter. Older, female and passed her test 2 years ago so looking at around £700.
She's not bought a car yet and looking at group 1,2 and possibly 3 cars, interestingly some of the quotes for group 1 are higher than for group
2 and 3. Funny old world.
Had a group 6 car when I was 21 (and this was when there were only 7 groups) £165 for a year which was 1 1/2 weeks wages. Guess it would be a bit more
than that now.

I'm 21 now and pay £320 with 3 points. I insured myself as a provisional driver for 1124 quid, a pound for every cc of the engine, when i passed
it didn't go up - that was with churchill.

I insured my first car on a provisional at 21 (205 1.6 auto three door) for about £1K with my dad as a named driver (He had a truck at the time so
couldn't drive it on his), it went up to about £1500 when I passed.
Ignor insurance groups, they are only usefull as a guide. On What car they used to have profiles which included a typical insurance quote for every
car and alot of them bore no relation to the groups. My Brother tells me he gets awful quotes on things like Saxos and Corsas but much better quotes
on low end Golfs and Renault 5s.
If you haven't bought the car yet it might be worth looking around to see which new cars are offering free insurance. It would cost you more
imediatly but, assuming you look after the car and don't do stupid miles, it would retain alot of the value.
I still say its a fools game getting a car for a 17 y/o boy, £3000 would pay for alot of bus taxi and train miles.
