MOT Emmisions Q 's ??
Hi Folks,
Trying to get my car mot'd whats the scoop with emmisions testing ??
My car is a
Westfield MegaBlade
Age related plate (52 Plate)
Engine is a 1992 893cc Blade
What kind of emmisions test does it need ??
Visual smoke test ??
Co2 ??
None of my local garages seem to know,

def shouldn't be visible smoke. i think, when it comes to MOT, they put your cars details in the system and it should tell them on there what it
should meet. it should go on the gas analyser. if the garage wants to do visible smoke then i wouldn't complain...

One of my local garages said it would just be a Co2 test with a 3.5 % pass or something like that.

well, i *think it should meet whatever the standards were for the year of the car (2002?) if it was 3.5% then i think thats what it should be, but
their system should tell them

Nothing on my V5c stating Emmisions,i think it will just be tested as per requirements for a 92 engine !!!!

I remember it being said that one of the advantages of a Q plate was that it was just a visible smoke test since it was of undefined age, although
some testers still argued it went on the year of the engine. I'm not sure what the deal is now that the MOT process is all computer driven. I
was hoping nothing had changed 'cos I'll end up on a Q plate but I have a feeling it has.

Here is the updated mot emissions flow chart. bottom right states about kit cars.

also below is quoted from the mot bible itself. it could be handy.
"Vehicles Fitted with a differnt engine
Test according to which is older, engine or vehicle.
e.g. A 1995 car fitted with a 1991 engine (of whatever make), test to 1991 standards for emission purposes.
Note: The onus is on the vehicle presenter
to prove engine age."

Should be tested to the age of the engine, provided you can prove it's a 1992 engine. IIRC that's 3.5% CO and 1200ppm HC.

my V5 states under section 3 - Special Notes "SVA Cert Issued 09 08 2005 Emission Limit - %CO 4.5; HC 0.12.
This is for a 1986 2 litre Pinto - Q Plate.

Quite clear to me:
"For emissions purposes only, kit cars and amateur built vehicles first used
before 1 August 1998 and Wankel rotary-engined vehicles first used before
1 August 1987 are to be considered first used before 1 August 1975.
Kit cars and amateur built vehicles first used on or after 1 August 1998 ("S"
reg) are required to obtain Single Vehicle Approval and should be tested to
the limits stated on the log book / registration certificate."

Except, of course, that the V5 quite often doesn't have any limits on it, and when it does they're quite often wrong. And will inevitably
be wrong if you change the engine for an older one, or if you have Q-plate (visual smoke only test).
