Recon engine number

I have got a Pinto engine which has been reconditioned. This is where my problems begin. The reconditioner has ground off the original engine number and replaced it with his own and Ford are therefore unable to confirm the year of manufacture. The SVA man has said that he (may) accept a letter from Ford stating when the Pinto ceased production so all may not be lost. Has anybody had any dealings along these lines as I was wondering what I may expect to happen next?
