Oil leaking from bellhousing

Unfortunately our nice new duratec install is slightly flawed in that we appear to have transmission oil dripping out of the bellhousing.

Its deffo transmission as it has that distinctive smell!

Would I be right in assuming that this is going to be the input shaft seal?

Big job im guessing

Could be either the input shaft or the selector shaft.

If you fitted a new seal on the input shaft then its likely the selector shaft.

Input shaft seal is a 5 min job....but you need the engine out first

Did you remember and fit a spigot bearing to the end of crankshaft ?

Other wise it is the tranny input oil seal easy enough to fix. Ford specified a lower oil lievel because of leaks from this seal the oil revised level should be about 10 to 15mm below the level plug on a level surface.

Sweet! So that means its normal to leak if full to the filler level?

Normal for it to weep slightly over a high mileage if overfilled..

What box are you using? If its type 9 you did use a gasket or sealer around where the layshaft Comes through the front of the box didn't you?

Yeah we did seal around the selector - presume thats what you mean by layshaft?

Going back to Britishtridents comment, what relevance is the spigot bearing to leaks out of interest?

No the selector comes through at the top into a recess in the bellhousing, the end of the layshaft is visible bellow it in the front of the gearbox casing. Standard gasket between bellhousing and gearbox encloses both areas which I've had trouble from before with leakage.

Just to add that there a 2 different filler plug locations depending on how old the box is - newer boxes have a lower filler plug location compared to the older higher ones.
