Me vs Carbon Mods Skinning Kit - Pics

Well seeing as I'm bored & off work on the sick due to my knee ligaments being torn, I thought it was the ideal time to order a carbon mods skinning kit to replace the poorly colour coded tin top grille, something to do in front of 'this morning' you know (Holly Willoughby - drool)

Part all cleaned off:

The kit (£50 delivered):

Base coat on:

Carbon on and 1 layer of top resin to 'wet it out':

2 more resin coats, lots of shaping the rear, 6 grades of wed and dry and 2 coats of laquer later:

Tomorrow it'll be ready to polish and fit. Halfway through I wish I'd never started but it looks cool now. I don't think I could have picked a more difficult part to have my 1st attempt on, way to many compound curves!

Anyway, what do we think?

That is a whole lot of snaziness!

£50? I want to carbon something. . . . . what can I carbon!?!

Well done, that will set the Skoda customising world on fire!

Yeah it does! it's added just over 1mm wall thickness to it, the matting is extremely thin but the resin is where you have the chance to get it wrong.

It needed carefull fettling with a tri square file to trim back the top resin from key areas, then it fitted ok

I made sure of that before I bothered clear coating it

That needs a picture of Holly Willoughby in there.

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

Not sure about it. Whats the point? Just Bling for the sake of it.
Carbon is used for losing weight on a car not adding to it!
Your work is impressive, but if it was a new part rather than a cover up, Id like it more

Yeah the wife was ok about it, she didn't mind it on the living room floor while the laquer dried either!

I think it's about £100 - £150 to do a tin top bonnet

As for the purpose, well it had a chrome grille which looked bunk, then it got colour coded which proceeded to suffer very badly from stonechips, so I figured I'd skin it to make it look cool. Everyone knows carbon is ideal for weight, but also everyone knows it looks cool as f**k too!

Otherwise nobody would be bothering with di-noc etc. Moulding a new one would have cost another £50 or so, to buy a mould making kit, but for this purpose, it's unneccesary. It hardly matters when theres all that diesel lump up front and lardy german chassis

I've got offcuts left over, not much really so to do anything good I'd need a bit more. But I do have some resin/top resin left and I will be playing a lot more with this in the future, it's so cool.

Steve Hignett posted pics of a Beemer roof he did a while back, now that was ballsy let me tell you!!!!!

My burning question has always been, do you need to have one continuous piece to look decent? Or can you bodge together the offcuts? I've got quite a bit of little bits too.

I would say it would be better with contiuous piece but I did read on their site somewhere that on certain objects, cutting and patching is inevitable, so I think it's possible. So long as you line the weave up so the light all catches it roughly the same way then it may look good.

Mine doesn't like the look of carbon fibre. Yes, I know it is completely weird.

We may ask who in his right mind would make a car when you can go buy a nice one, a more reliable, practical one, well performing to boot, and save yourself a lot of trouble. It's a bit like asking an artist why he makes things.

Wouldnt bother! A lad at work spent ages making carbon iphone covers from scratch, very light and very nice looking but the carbon kills your reception and wifi! He takes his off to make a call unless he has full signal!

Still sold them for £50 a pop though...

Sorry but just dressing a sheep in wolf's clothing doesn't make it a wolf!
I catagorize this sort of mod in the same bracket as your local chav with his 1 litre Nova with a 6" diameter tailpipe!
My carbon wheel arches serve a purpose, they are very light.
Important on a bec.
Like I said, I'm not critising the work as it is very good
