IVA fail at Birmingham
I was really nervous, but it turned out to be a lovely day.
I expected breakdowns etc, but the car ran well meaning I got there 2 hours early.
Dave the tester was very reassuring and helpful. He took time to explain what needed to be done and took a lot of the stress out of the experience. He
even printed out pages from the manual with relevant bits highlighted!
The drive back home was a real blast and I arrived with a big smile.
Fail points:
1. Front brake unions not supported properly (must not sandwich the aluminium sidewall).
2. One under dash area needs a piece of edge trim.
3. No head restraint fitted (how did I miss that one?)
4. Manufacturer's plate did not have the axle weight info or a manufacturer's name (ie my name)
5. Needs more caster to improve self centreing.
That was a lot less than I was expecting!!

didn't know you had to have the axle weights on the id plate.
Chassis normally have tabs welded on for the brake pipe supports, if yours hasnt can you get away with pop riveting brackets on or do you have to get
the welder out again?
What will you do about the head restaints can you fix soemthing to the roll bar?
As some day it may happen that a victim must be found,
I've got a little list-- I've got a little list
Of society offenders who might well be underground,
And who never would be missed-- who never would be missed!

You can make the plate yourself but it needs Chassis no., Manufacturer's name and front and rear axle weights. I'm going to stamp one in
aluminium.
The chassis is built by me so it's all my fault - the tester said that the aluminium flexes too much so I guess I'll weld a steel tab that
sits against the alumium.
The head restraints are going to be fixed to a horizontal tube welded between the upright parts of the roll bar.
The car is has been cobbled together using cheap or recycled bits and certainly looks homemade. I was very relieved that it didn't seem to
bother him at all.

Both 1) and 3) would have passed sva.
I will also be pleased to come away with a list that short.
Also nice to see a "locost"

Well done! Not such a bad fail, all pretty easy fixes.
I'm just filling to forms in at the moment for a test at Bham. How long did you have to wait for the test ?

Waiting time
I booked 5 weeks in advance as a way of focussing the mind and getting me to knuckle down. I'm hoping the retest waiting time will be short.
Thanks for your kind words everyone.
Cheers

Good fail, well done.
Should be fairly easy to fix those. Re-tests don't usually have to wait long.
