reverse gear

Hi all.
I need to start thinking about getting a reverse gear, I like the look of the starter motor kit. Anyone know how much and were to get one from?Needs to suit a live rear axle Cortina?

You wont be able to mount it to the rear axle with out adding a lot of unsprung weight. Its not like irs where you can bolt the starter to the chassis. You would also have the wiring to think about.

Yes thats what I am saying.

You have a cortina axle that is always moving up and down. How will you get the motor to mesh with the ring gear if its allways moving ?

You would have to bolt the starter and brackets to the axle or it won't work.
You could look at doing it at the gearbox end but would still have to bolt it to the gearbox or if the prop shaft has a fix bearing in the tunnel that could be the place to fit it

Means a bit of farting about but could you rig up a short propshaft from a body mounted
starter to a gearset on the diff mounted gear to allow for the movement ?

Thats not really possible, you can't just reverse the direction the engine turns!

i have the same problem as you mate im useing an mx 5 diff but have no room at the rear of my car to fit a gear between the shaft and diff! so ive come up with an idea for mine and i think if might work for you to im gona machine a cup type flange for the engine drive flange and mount a aluminium go cart sprocket to it and weld a piece of go cart chain link around the starter motor this will work the same as a toothed gear its hard to explain but when ive done it i will try to send you some pics its easy and cheap to do.
