Roads advice: Skegness / Whitby / Yorks Moors
Guys, planning a bit of a road trip with Southern Kit Cars for next year. So far it seems that we may well stop off at Skegness + Whitby on the way
up.
We'd be expecting to travel in the following direction:
Kings Lynn to Skeg
Skeg along the Coast to Whitby
Whitby into the Moors and down to the top of the Peak District.
I'd be very grateful if anyone has suggestions for roads in those areas that we really should be looking at factoring in ( or ones that we dont
want to be touching). Local knowledge is always handy when trying to find a few corkers, nowt worse than finding out afterwards that we were in teh
area but missed a beauty!
Although those are the evening stop off points there's nothing to stop us varying the direct route, coming a bit inland or taking a more scenic
option.
So feel free with your advice!!

On way north to Skeg avoid the A52 as its full of speed cameras and its down to 30's and 40's most of the way, instead I take the A16

We have had a real bad week for accidents here in Licolnshire with a number of deaths, be aware that Lincolnshire police are going to be high profile
out and about for a while as a result.

I know it'll be a bit (or alot) of a detour. Try the road between Revesby and Horncastle B1183. It's awesome. Only about 5 miles from me.
I use it alot in the summer for a quick blast. Some straights and some great corners. You'll love it!!!

lots of tight twisting technical bits from york to helmsley providing access to lots of little villages seperated by countryside. Only ever seen
police bikes running their bikesafe courses on there.
The road from helmsley to stokesly is a bit more open and flowing, laid out like a ribbon starting high up and descending down into a valley before
climbing again after the village of chopgate.. The road has had quite alot (57 in 3-5 years) of casualties and the local press have nicknamed it
'the road of death'.. For most of the road you can see well ahead and where the road is going next, but if you attack a few bits of it
just that tiny bit too quickly it'll rip your arms off.
Also, the last little meander which looks like an upside down horseshoe shape before coming back into helmsley will let you see some of the most
untouched bits of the north york moors (properly barron in places!)..
The b1257 out of helmsley up to stokesley is the best bit of the road in the UK in my opinion, and this is the view at the lookout point just before
you turn onto the unlisted/b-roads towards commondale:
lots of stupid plucking pheasants to run out on you as well... beautiful birds all the same
Petrol stations at points A, B and in whitby (plus a few others along the way)..
Holmfirth to the snake
pass is another route I try and do atleast a few times a year  snakk pass inn (the pub) is well worth stopping at - massive portion of
sirloin steak with chips and salad for about £12 iirc..

Paul: by luck i'd picked that Helmsley-Stokesly rd. I cant view the map, google just centres on Stokesly.......if you're able to
check/resend that'd be handy!
Dan: bit far west for us. Now i see i need to avoid the a52 would be thinking of something like: either the b1183 ( but turning off at Revesby) or a16
and then east onto either the b1195 or a158 for the final miles to Skeg. Thoughts????

how rude of me: forgot to mention that helmsley is a great little place for lunch stop..
Hunters of Helmsley is a cracking sandwich shop with a novel delicatessen, and loads of sweet
treats to take home for the family/missus.. It's just off the village square (which incidentally is basically a big carpark with a monument
& loads of pubs cafe's looking onto it).

absolutely love this bit of north yorkshire - lots of wide open space with not many people, great place to get lost and have a picnic before firing up
the bike and heading off down some more twisties

If you up that way, Olivers Mount is worth a visit at Scarborough, its a small road circuit, open to the public, you can drive round there, I took the
TVR round last year, which was fun,the tight hairpins are great, its like driving a hill climb circuit

yep olivers mount is a great detour.
you can run the hillclimb circuit or the full mountain motorcycle circuit. You will appreciate how mental the bike races are who race on their!!!
beware... recce the circuit first as it has a 30mph speed limit on non race days.
if you come off its armco or trees

I travelled to whitby via skeggy etc from kings lynn last week for my holiday. Roads to skeggy are a bit slow but gets better after that right up to
the humber bridge. after the humber some of the roads are a little slow but keep moving. Also watch out for the road that has cattle walking across!!!
Cant remember where that was. Scarborough to whitby was the most fun up and down the hills.
Give you a little tip, DONT drive down to the bay at robins hoods bay!! Feck thats steep!! I got stuck and had to reverse down it!

Matt, out of interest do you recall how long it took you from Skeggie to Whitby?
( which roads did you do that were slow!!)

Never done Skegness but I know Hornsea to skipsea is 10 minutes or so, skipsea to Bridlington is 15-20 minutes, bridlington to scarbrough is roughly
an hour, and I think to Whitby is about another 45 mins (that last bit is off the top of my head)... From skipsea to hull on the a165 (not going along
the coastal road) takes about 50 minutes, and when I was at cadwell park recently (near Louth) it took me around an hour from the north side of the
Humber bridge to get down to Louth itself.. Looking at the distance from Louth to Skegness on the map I'd say another hour at the very
least..
So adding it all together I reckon just over 5 hours if you don't faff about at petrol stops, add an hour on for 3 petrol/fag break stops, or
2.5 hours I'd you're stopping regularly for photos/and a proper lunchbreak
