Fixing garage door cable!

One has snapped on my old up and over door,
Apparantly they are a complete pain to change involving trapped fingers, swearing and a nastly spring.
Is it time to get someone in?

If its a henderson, when you buy the cable the instructions are in the kit about £20 when i changed mine.
Just remember to clamp the spring thats when it gets nasty.
You can get the cable a Doves etc.

The spring will have no tension on now so when you put the new cable on its ok, just clamp the spring when putting the tension back.

I've got Cardale garage doors and have had to replace the cables on both in the past few years. I got the spares from http://www.garage-door-spares.co.uk/ - quick service and a reasonable price. They were a bit of a pain to fit, but I managed to do it singlehanded. If you managed to build a car, it shouldn't be beyond you but, in any case, it would probably be worth trying yourself to try to avoid having to use your hard-earned

Ok I've looked at the instructions I think it is the henderson type so I need the two cones and cables kit.
Only one cable is broken so in theory I don't need to retension the spring.
Its seems to be a case of

Working inside the garage assume door closed??
Insert crook pin.
remove jamb panel (assume this is the guide the two rollers sit in.
remove the head bolts holding the spring assembly
remove the door.

replace teh cones and springs using a toggle bar to allow crook pin to be removed,
put the door back in place (shut position??)
head bolts to reattach spring assembly to door frame.
roller guid channels back on

job done, have a pint and think how I saved £80 without taking my fingers off.
Does this sound about right?

nows there's the vote of confidence, you're only in the next county you should have to come and help and loose a finger in support of a fello locoster!
If someone can find me a repairer who will do it for £40 do let me know. Quotes so for more like £80, that my steering rack!!!

I have replaced my Garador cable a few times, single handed, the tension in the spring is enormous, think I wore thick overalls, gloves and safety specs in case I let go of the cable acidentally.

if its the type where the cable winds up on a tapered pulley, they are not that bad to do
fixed one last year

I'd love to give my imaginary friend a great big hug,

You have my vote, its no problem and its not a dirty job, the worst bit is and its just a word of warning , when you tension the spring cos even if its only one cable it will be lost is that if you dont keep it clamped the allen key you use to put tension on is that it springs back and the allen key flys off.

Just take it canny.

Ditto, unfortunately and on a 14 ft wide door. Twice
If I can do it, anyone on here should be able to. It's not that bad, just use your loaf.
Bit of a PITA but easily do-able.
Just put a 4"steel peg on the spring collar to stop it turning. Rest against the garage wall above/below the spring, depending on which way the spring wants to turn. Not as much tension as people think. You will hold it easily on the peg.
Go for it.
