Locking caliper bolts.

Is it acceptable for IVA to put lock washers on the bolts before they go through the hub and into the caliper? Or a pic of putting thread lock on?

Cheers

Dave,
failed my IVA as there was no evidence of locking present. The tester said it would be ok to use threadlock on the bolts. Didnt even check on the re test took my word (sucker). Got to ask your self how many garages use threadlock when reassembling calipers... not many I bet.

Cheers.

How many manufacturers use it?

I doubt many manufacturers don't as a caliper falling off would cost them more in lost sales and legal costs.

The ones I've seen have it already applied and they are only supposed to be used once. It's probably cheaper than a lock washer and bolt and the main stealer gets to charge an extra couple of quid for replacements.

Like these

But for IVA I'd use whatever the original locking mechanism was.

At my IVA the inspector asked my Dad and I " You used loctite on the caliper bolts didn't you as there are no spring washers?" whilst nodding his head.

Hi guys,

Where is this requirement stated in the IVA manual? I've not come across it.

Got IVA relatively soon so would like to get some loctite on them if it's a definite requirement.

I'd do it out of piece of mind regardless of the IVA. £2 for a bottle and 5 minutes to apply on all the bolts.
I put a note on the bottom of all my receipts for brake kits saying all bolts must be secured with threadlock just so people know to do it.

I put anti rattle star washers under mine as it used to have lock tab but as the front wing mount goes on one bolt then the lock tab became redundant.
