I would really recommend the book:
How to Modify Ford Single Overhead Camshaft Engines
by David Vizard

Amazon have got it with 30% off at the moment.

It goes into all kinds of detail about getting the most power from the pinto with the least cost,
whats good and bad about the standard parts.

There are some really simple things that appear
to be very effective.

I *think* from memory that one of the types of
carbs is quite good, and the others not so. I can
check tonight if I remember.

Yes, you would get a fair bit more power from a set of DCOEs
