MGB in autotrader ringer or not?

Am I doing this car injustice?
A 1966 car, re shelled in 1978 with a shell bought in 1976, then completed in 2008 and ends up with a 1980/81 plate. And being sold as a 1978.

Is it a ringer or would it have been SVA'd after the re shell and then had a cherished plate fitted?

Just that it looks a nice car

maybe dubious. If it had been finished in 1978, i think it would be no problem as there was no sva back then. However, it possibly could also have stayed on the 1966 plate, since you are allowed to replace a body shell.

If it was really finished in 2008 then i would imagine the dvla would want it sva'ing as it would count as a vehicle of indeterminate age. However, that might not be the case.

I think more details are needed really.

Wuh? It's a 1966 car built in 1976/8/80 and not finished being built until 2007? Legal or not I'm not going to try sticking that into comparethemeerkat!

I think it would be ok personally - it's not a car with a different car's identity as far as I can see.

It stinks!

Why would you re-register a 1966 car in 1980???

Plus, body shapes changed, bumpers, ride height etc etc

Earlier models have always been worth loads more and always will be.

Might not be a ringer as such (using one identity to hide a stolen vehicle), but this MG has some unexplained history going on.

Smells funny, looks funny!

To be fair if they didn't put all the odd-sounding carp on there this line of questioning wouldn't be happening, I mean it looks pretty much spot on and well worth the money.

It does say its a 66 in th ad...

It is probably down to the change over from the old green logbooks, to the V5 system, there was a cutoff point where you had to surrender the green book, and go V5, if you didn't you lost the registration.

At £6995 thats not a bad buy, my zetec engined version sold for £7500, and that was a 72 with a rebuilt bodyshell, I'd have no hesitation buying this one if I was in the market for another B.

could this be the case that when the chap who bought the new shell in 78, intending on completing the rebuild, registered it as a new car in 1980 to gain 14 years betterment on his original 66. how much were 14 year old mg's worth in 1980?

they were maybe looking for a fast pound or two

I have a kit that was purchased in 1985. I have an MOT that states year of manufacture as 1974 and an inspection letter from DVLA from 1992. V5 has date of manufacture as 1992. SO, I have a legit car that was built and registered in 1985 on a 1992 book. All verified and endorsed by DVLA. Two different reg numbers have adorned this car.

Rebodying or new chassis at any time are regarded as replacement bits and do not require IVA.

Look at how many MINT classic Fords are built up from piles of rust running round on original reg's.
