Engine breathing

I have breather pipes from my crank case and my filler cap into a catch tank with a breather filter on my pinto but ive noticed from pics that others dont. Ive also noticed that oil vapour is blowing out of the filter after a hard run. Should this be happening?
What are the pro and cons of either set up please?

I can't speak for the Pinto but I've got a similar setup on my Rover V8 and it blows crankcase fumes out the catch tank breather after a run too. I think this is pretty normal and wouldn't worry unless the fumes are really bad (eg. enveloping the car in clouds of blue smoke!)

If you think about it, the catch tank is there for a reason - to catch oil therefore there is expected to be oil fumes. If you can keep the catch tank cooler then perhaps there is more chance of the fumes condensing first. My catch tank is not far from my exhaust headers so isn't as cool as it perhaps should be. In fact, I think I'd have to bolt it OUTSIDE the engine bay to have any chance of keeping it cool!

Hth,
Craig.

My Xflow also has pushed some oil into my catch tank (coke bottle)
the oil appears to be very runny in the bottle, and is oil, and does not appear to be a water mix, but is it ok to stick straight back into the engine, or is it more of a moisture mix, and more of a throw away item ?

I don't know for sure but I'd tend to throw it away. I'm guessing it is going to have higher water content than you'd ideally want to have for lubrication.

pinto's are heavy breathers...

how big is the catch tank you've got ?
how is the crank case breather connected ?

Catch tank is about a litre. Ive taken the original part from the engine and cut the bottom off so the air flows straight out and up to the catch tank.
Is there any benefit to brething the rocker cover through the filler cap?

My tuned pinto used to breath a bit when giving it the beans par for the course for these old engines

All i can say is that when i was having trouble getting it to run right the cylinders were all dry tested and came up about 8.5.
Mcerd1, do you think its worth running the filler cap pipe?
