Moving a part built kit? (north Wales)
Evening all.
I've had no luck selling my part built Sylva Mojo, so I need to come up with a cunning plan as to how I can transport it to my new house.
It's not a big distance, only about 0.6 miles. It is all roads that are on a housing estate too, although the one road is pretty busy really.
There are several small hills (up and down) innvolved. My car is on it's wheels. It has brakes (but they are not bled). It does not have the
handbrake connected yet.
I'm not keen at all on getting a few mates and pushing it around. For that I would probably need it to be insured/taxed etc. Knowing my luck
if I tried that, Mr Plod would happen to be passing too...
So I was thinking about trailering it. The trouble is, I have no tow vehicle (well, I have a T4 van, but it doesn't have a tow hitch fitted).
I have no mates who have trailers, or towing cars either. So, are there places where I can hire a trailer for an hour or so? Or does anyone on here,
who has a trailer, fancy earning a few beer tokens and helping me out?
Or, does anyone have any cunning ideas as to how I can get this kit moved?

I know this will be a grey area, but if it's not a "car", then surely getting your mates to push you down the road in it is akin to
pushing kid in a soap-box car? i.e. no tax/insurance/MOT required.
If you were to tow it though, that's a different question.
Mind you, if it was just a mile, I would just do it carefully... Not advice, just personal opinion!

Still dark on a morning so do it nice an early, I shift stuff at 6am all the time as best time nice and quiet noone about,

I think arguing that it is not a car might be interesting, it looks like a car, has an engine (albeit one that has no electrics installed at all), has
a steering wheel, brakes gears etc etc. Maybe I'll keep the option of pushing it, as a last resort though....

If you enquire locally there is bound to be a local guy with a trailer or transporter to move it. I moved my kit 10 miles for £40 return by a low
level trailer. Would recommend him if he was closer to you.

Posted similar question on couple forums recently and got three offers of help from people with trailers. Can hire a recovery truck for about £100 a
day.

Been a while since I did my defintions of what a car is.....
If it looks like its meant to be a car and is on a road, it needs insurance and tax.
My local garage has a guy who does breakdowns with a tatty old Transit pickup - there must be somebody local to you similar, who would shift it for
£30 or so.

id agree the law would count it as a car. 0.6miles is such an annoyingly small distance though!

could you call in to the local police station and ask to speak to a traffic cop, see if you can explain what you want to do pushing it and see if they
can give you the nod?
Surely as it isn't technically a car some discretion can be used by the officer? And you have an honest chat the worse they can say is NO, and
you are no worse off for it (as you are currently considering trailering anyway)

Just push it and stop fretting, do it when it's quiet as stated above. Even if a copper saw you I can't imgine you'd get booked if
you explained you were moving house and pushing it round the new place which you can point to if it's half a mile away. The fact it's all
housing estate too makes it even easier.

Surely it's not legally a car until it's been registered or IVA'd? Like above it's a hunk of steel with wheels on it

I'd just push it too. Until is has IVA, chassis number, etc it's not a car, just a very elaborate wheel barrow. It's not like they
can claim you were driving it and just switched it off when they arrived.
What's the worst they can give you? A fine? How much is the fine vs the cost of the transport?
Maybe you could say some 'kids' pinched must have seen it on your drive and pushed it down the road. You spotted it abandonded so the
easiest solution to avoid it being a hazard or obstruction on the highway was to push it back?

Just to answer some of the issues raised in this thread – the issue is whether the Mojo is a “motor vehicle” as defined in section 185 Road traffic
Act 1988 , that is, a mechanically propelled vehicle intended or adapted for use on the roads.
Long established precedent cases provide that the relevant test is whether the vehicle has reached such a stage that it can be said “there is no
reasonable prospect of the vehicle ever being made mobile again”
Other case law provides that a vehicle with the engine removed does not cease to be a mechanically propelled vehicle if the evidence admits the
possibility that the engine might be replaced shortly and thus motive power restored. Therefore it is a question of fact and degree depending on the
circumstances of each individual case.
With this Mojo I understand the engine is fitted but no electrics are connected. I presume the transmission is fitted. Therefore I would say that it
is a “motor vehicle” and needs to be taxed, insured and have a VEL before being “used” on a road

Sorry guys but I have to disagree with you who are saying its not a car until it is IVAd. My track car is completely unregistered, but there is no
way I would ever have it on her majesties highway, be that wih engine running or not.
Just because its not a registered car, doesnt stop it being a car.

I think the question is less whether or not it is a car, since it pretty obviously is- despite it being unregistered and non operational. Saying that,
I think a cop trying to prosecute you for simply wheeling the vehicle from A to B would be very anal. You wouldn't get done for moving it using
a dolly, so push comes to shove put a couple of skateboards under the front wheels and move it on those 
If disfunction is a function, then I must be some kind of genius.
