Wanted: Welding Gas & pos regulator

I've got a MIG welder, but still haven't used it since I haven't got gas!

I've got a Argon bottle with Argon regulator.

Also have a small pub Co2 bottle.

Both are empty.

I *think* both are out of test but not sure. Co2 defo is.

Can anybody here either refill or do an exchange? Can't get anything from a local pub.

I don't really mind which gas, but prefer CO2 due to cost. Will just need a CO2 reg then.

I'm just south of Stratford-upon-Avon but do runs up the M42 and to Manchester most weekends..

Talk nicely to your local friendly landlord for the CO2.
It used to cost abt £7 a bottle for a refil.
Even if you paid double it would still be cheap (ie no rental)

Other than that Adams Gas in Margate. Dont know of any nearer to you.
Adams will post it. Again not cheap, but no rental and will do Argon.
For a MIG I recon you would only need something like CO2 wit 5% Argon, and not pure Argon.

I could be wrong, but I cant see you needing pure Argon unless you are doing TIG or Ally welding.

Just my 2d's worth.

EDIT:
Whose is the Argon Bottle? ie is it BOC, Air Liquide, Air Products etc?
If Its Air Liquide, I might be interested in buying it off you.

Argon regulator will work with CO2

Argon/CO2 mix gives best results, straight CO2 from the pub will have more splatter but if you buy a can of anti splatter and spray on the work and inside the nozzle things improve

When you weld you do not need to shove loads of gas on the job, just enough that you can feel it unless windy.

I Thought the CO2 reg had a female fitting? the argo reg should be male.

Enquire at BOC about the Hobbyists Rate, it is much reduced, I haven't got a bill to hand, but it is very affordable.

Pub CO2 is about £17 a refill now, depending on bottle size. Still a cheap way to go.
A suitable regulator can be had off the bay for very little money.

Halfords sell the small gas bottles if you get really desperate. Should be too pricey if you have a trade card?

Thanks all,

I'm not desperate, but I'd like to start practicing welding as I'm hoping to get the chassis and other bits not too long into the new year. Therefore absolutely no disposable bottles! (even though I have a trade card).

As someone said, the Argon reg is a different fitting for the bottle. It will work with Co2 gas but it's near impossible to find someone to fill an Argon bottle with Co2 (H&S nonsense).

I'll try some pubs further afield (I'm in a tiny village) for CO2.

I'll check whose the argon tank is, and i'll let you know - I have absolutely no need for it if I get CO2 up and running.
