Gear box fluid breather???

I have noticed that what Im thinking is a breather tank for the gear box (Westy reverse) on my Megablade has a habit of spitting a fair bit of the stuff out on a good run, Ive just lifted the bonnet and found quite a sticky little puddle all along the bottom scuttle seal.
1. Is the stuff damaging to anything it could have leaked onto under the scuttle?
2. There is about 12mm of the stuff at the bottom of the breather tank (see pics), I asume this is supposed to run back into the box?
3.Why does so much come out and is it an issue?
4.Should I be topping this up?

Im a bit concerned it could end up running dry?.....

Yes you have been done the courtesy of a breather/filler oil tank for your westfield/quaife reverse. It's a well known phenomena that these exit oil in use and this is a good enough way of dealing with it.
It's not going to do a lot of harm, though oily and unpleasant
Make sure theres a pinhole breather in the lid and I woukd suggest at cold it's empty, leaving room for the oil to be collected and then dripped back in.

So do they not all have one then? What's the benefits? It always has around 12mm in the bottom, maybe it's been over filled at some point? Thanks for the advice btw....
Would a breather tube from the hole in the lid help?
