Barkston Heath 23-06-12, Drift & Sprint Videos

Myself & ReMan went unto Barkston Heath yesterday, both had our cameras with us - here are the first couple of mine, I'm sure he has some too...

Trackday held by Javelin Trackdays, very relaxed & laid back - thoroughly enjoyed the day.

Videos filmed on a Go Pro HD Hero 2, at 1080p @ 25fps, 170fov.

Looks like great fun.

A couple of questions....Why are you let go of the steering wheel while trying to drift? Do you not have a quick rack? On the sprint course you where driving with only one hand on the steering wheel. Might be a lot faster/safer to have a paddle shift so you can keep both hands on the wheel or change your driving style.

Thanks for the reply.

It was my first time out in the car in an aggressive manor.

To drift you naturally let go of the steering wheel, usually by letting the steering wheel glide through your hands (keeping contact with the wheel, and catching it at the right time) but with this steering wheel being flat bottom/ D shaped, if you were to do this you'd end up breaking your thumbs & fingers, so I was keeping my digits well out of the way.

The car doesn't have a quick-rack to my knowledge.

Not sure where you're coming from saying its safer with two hands on the wheel, at no point during the day was I unsafe? Given the conditions, lack of use of the car, lack of trust in the brakes, I'm happy with how quick I was considering I was on the cheap ditch-finder wheels & tyres I bought for £30.

Noticed a very old fracture in the rear upright on the near side of the car, causing the rear nearside to have about 2 degrees positive camber (bearing in mind the rear offside has 1.5degrees negative), so that needs to be changed before my next serious outing, along with softer springs, and the rake of the car being changed.

You look like you may have a quick rack to me looking at you steering input, just turn your wheel lock to lock, quick racks are between 2 1/4 to 2 1/2 turns.
Your driving style is the same as mine, one hand on the gearchange all the time, I just feel awkward with two hands on the wheel and a paddle shift, its not slowing you down, so stick with it I say

It was a fun day. But I’ve had better days!
The PM was better than the AM.

AM went like:
Trailer MK to location to reduce the chance of any problems
Fill MK and Fuel cans up in Grantham, about 5 Miles from Barkstone Heath Airfield.
Get to Airfield, realise Petrol cap is missing on MK, With all its and other keys attached to it!
Drive back to Grantham to check if let at filling station. No.
Scour road close to filling station No. Go to police station to check if handed in No.
Go back to airfield, wait 10 mins at security gate to be let back in as staff had started briefing.
Staff were good and brought us up to speed without any fuss though.
Stare at MK on trailer wondering how to circumnavigate the (std Sierra) steering lock and ignition without trashing the car Run out as driver and passenger in Olly’s car cheered me up and egged me on, thanks Olly, you were brave!

Set to the lock with a drill, 5 minutes later screwdriver in the lock and all systems go ;-)
Rags and gaffer tape over fuel filler to keep it in
Crappy old (T1R) tyres fitted to rear and bingo.

Did about a dozen laps of the “drift” circuit not much drifting but lots of spinning. Actually didn’t enjoy it that much in so much as it goes against the grain of keeping things smooth and straight not sideways, but good experience
Spin into tyre wall as per video, Crack rear wing, nothing to serious fortunately

LUNCH

PM attack the sprint course:
This was different again.
Great little circuit around 1min per lap, quite narrow, but nice smooth tarmac and A CLOCK!
Unlimited runs with no pressure from a queue or an audience!
Gradually improving on the times as the afternoon went on.
Fitted my new R1R’s back on the rear for trhe last 3 runs and gained 2 seconds a lap.
Till it was pointed out by the starter that I had a nail in the side of one of them!
I think I may have sworn a bit more at thjis point, but it was the end of the day and time to pack up anyway.

Happy that I got my old Fireblade within 2 Seconds of Olly's Busa MK and 4 seconds of a very sorted Cateringvan

AFTERMATH
Noticed on the way home I’d not got my shades. Serached but lost in action
Key on fob, Could’nt unpadlock the security gates ! Had to angle grind the lock off.
Only key to bike type cable lock gone too, fortunately the rest I have spares of.

All in all a good, if not expensive , cheap trackday!

Dont let this put you opff thogh.
This wa an exception, I've done many that have cost me nothing but the fuel. I cant wait to go back!!
