Revotec do an adapter for about £15 you can the use a sensor from say a mondeo, very cheap from a scrap i. This is a hall effect sensor and will feed most good quality gauges. if you can get it to fit in the trans' tunnel.

Does anyone have a link to the Revotec part ?

Just had a quick google check and cant find it.

I didnt even realise you could get an electronic sensor for the type 9, that would make my life a tad easier

Then fit your Sensor, available from Ebay

My car has the mt75 that already has the sensor built in but on a type 9 this is the adapter

link

Afew places sell them.

The speedo senor, well the last one I bought was a pound or so (lots of work to remove it) and I used it to test my set up out.

I like it much better than the magnets, its super smooth and reliable.

It will stick out the side of a T9 but you could run the sensor froma a cable.
