Declaring SORN without V5C?

I have managed to buy myself a little "play car" for the summer which I intend to use on a Euro road-trip.

My old car (which I intend to use again after the summer) is no longer insured as I had to switch cars on the policy.

In the good old days I could have left it as it is... but I believe I will get a fine if the car is insured....

So.. I need to declare the car as off the road SORN... I dont have the V5C as it is back at my University lodgings.... Anyone know if I can declare SORN without the number on the V5C?!

Its a stupid system... it really is.........

I declaere SORN online, but you need the V% for it, but you can do it by phone too.

It's only stupid if you forget your important documents

Without the V5 I see no way of sorning it, as they need to know you're the registered keeper of the car.

I have been through this recently the only way to do it is apply for a new V5 and submit a paper SORN form at the same time, there is an ammount of slack time designed into the SORN system there has to be as Swansea is backlogged because of staffing issues.

Even then the SORN will only commence at the Road Tax expiry which adds another layer of form filling to return the tax disc even if it only has a couple of weeks to run.

Call them in 6 weeks and ask them why you havent had confirmation of sorn yet? Pretend postman lost it. It takes them a few weeks to get your car off the insurance database in my experience.

In these days of short term insurance the VOSA system it is ill thought out, as I have said this before they need to work out a short term insurance that includes an option for matching short term road tax to allow people to move MOT'd cars legally

Personally, I would send them a letter by recorded delivery.

Explain why you need to declare SORN & the reason why you are unable to provide the V5 reference number.

I would also download a SORN declaration form, fill in as much as the details as you can & be sure to sign the declaration.

Your letter should explain why you have not been able to fully complete the enclosed paperwork.

End your letter by confirming that you are the registered keeper of the vehicle.

The law only requires you to declare that you intend to keep the vehicle off the road, by sending them a letter, you are acting in accordance with the relevant legislation on SORN.

I have personally done this in the past.

Would be a cold day in hell before I paid for a replacement V5 just to declare SORN
