Nick Days Tuning Bike Carbs and Setup @ M-Tech Automotive

Chaps,

Nick has asked me to post up his graph, and he'll be along to comment when he gets back from a track ay tomorrow.

Just finished tuning his Locost, 2.0 Blacotop fitted with R1 carbs. Had to jet-up and also, a truly noted difference (as we always believed) was we added a set of R1 intake rubbers (rather than just ending at the carb) that we had here, and it allowed us to release a futher 10bhp (need to upjet again however, but seriously guys, run the trumpets!!)



We offer full bike carb tuning (as well as ignition) for £120+VAT on our Dyno Dynamics rolling road, and the chap who does the tuning is our fabricator Simon, who cut his teeth in bike racing, and as a result, we always see great results...

It all looks good .
Can i ask how fitting r1 intake rubbers can give you 10 bhp over just having rubber tube ?
Have you any photos of the set up Please

He means the intake trumpets not the manifold one's ( i think )

YEs was the the air horns not the manifold ones, however, the manifold bike rubbers have steps in them to make the inlet tract smooth, rather than a step if you just use samco hosing.. something to bare in mind also...

Hi Matt,

What was the ignition set up on this zetec, was it your one on trial, how that project going, i have not resolved/ setup my zetec yet, what sort of air intake was it running, what sort of power difference would u expect from running smaller carbs ie 36 mm.

Andy,

This one was running a Megajolt, our system is still under development, though it is a working system which has clocked up a few thousand miles now, across various test cars, we are just building upon its feature set to make it truly the best ignition solution out there. Release will oficailly take place (everything continuing as it currently is) at the Donnington Kit Car show the first weekend of September.

The trumpets were the standard bike ones, running no airbox as such, open.

What you have to remember with Bike carbs is they are a CV type carb, rather than for example a Webber which uses a chokes to generate a venturi effect. In fact most 40 DCOE webber type carbs are chocked down to 32/34/36/38, if not smaller anyway, and of course ultimately the port size is the maximum flow restriction. Yes, it is true that air speed can increase and so on, so a smaller tract can be used, but 36mm is more than adequate on a CV type carburettor for Zetec use.

When a bike carb is 'wide open' and the sliders have lifted, you have an almost straight 36mm tract, right up to the valve back.

I won't attest to being a true carb expert (Give me a laptop rather than a screw driver anyway!) so some of the above may be wrong as it just what I have witnessed, heard discussed whilst learning about carb tuning, and my own personal understanding, but our fabricator and carb tuner (ex Bike chap) Simon knows more on this and I will ask for a more technical response from him tomorrow at work.

No problem, Simon confirmed what I said above so take that as a guideline for now, he is yet to do me wrong!

I would like to confirm what Matt has posted above.

I arrived (late sorry) and the car was promptly loaded on the rollers and a run with my guessed set-up gave 144hp.
The jets were drilled, the megajolt map tweaked and the next run gave 159hp.
I have to say for a standard 2.0 blacktop with a good exhaust manifold and bike carbs, that was about what I was expecting.
We then fitted the std Yamaha rubber bell mouths and the mixture went soooo lean we didn't even take it to max revs.
More drilling and we had 168hp. The cheapest 9hp I have ever bought.

So all told a successful couple of hrs.

The next day I was at Snetterton and the thing absolutely flew. The only issue was severe over fueling on the way out of left handers. This I am sure is down to the carbs being horizontal rather than nearly vertical as on the R1, (the manifold is being modified as I type this).

Just picked up on this thread. The graph above is almost identical to the results that we got with my Zetec on R1 carbs. However, we had the trumpets fitted before we started so I don't know if it would have made any difference, though I was told before I set off that they would help, so I managed to get a set off the bay of E But never realised that they would make so much difference. Now I have a spare set.. As a matter of interest, the main jets in the R1 carbs can be swapped for genuine Weber units as they exactly the same, so no buggering about with drills and the numbers correspond, ie, a 1.8mm drill equates to a Weber 180 jet.....
